Default High Definition sample videos

Dear all,

I want to test whether my self assembled multimedia computer is
capable of high definition video playback and I'm looking for sample
video clips. I already found some samples but I'm unsure if these are
"real life" examples.

The samples should meet the technical specifications of videos found
on HD-DVDs/Blueray discs, in particular encoding (H.264?) and
resolution (1080p). The samples should also contain surround sound
audio tracks so that the computer needs to decode high resolution
video and multi-channel audio tracks.

Thanks!

Hello Martull,

I have just assambled my own computer to do exactly the same. I would
like to know wich operating system you have installed and what multimedia
players you are going to use.

I've installed Kubuntu 7.10 and will have a look at LinuxMCE (http://
linuxmce.com/) when it's released for Kubuntu 7.10. For now I prefer
Kaffeine for video playback and Amarok for music.

The original material om the HD-DVD and the Blu-Ray are DRM protected.
There are some samples like the wmv showcase. Apple has a showcase as well:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/

There are some in 1080p too. By the way the bitrate chosen again
cirkulates around the "magical" 10 megabit/sek. Just like the MS Showcase
samples. There is a way up to the "average" 25 megabit(13-35)/sek on the
discs.
But mabe not so different afterall, becourse it is made with 2 pass
encoding (The David Gilmore 1080p) and the bitrate therefore varies from
about 6.5 to 18 megabit/sek, with an average of 10 Megabit/sek.
The sound is 2 channel mpega and the codec is AVC1, which I estimate to be
a wmv9 codec. The difficulty lies in the container which is .mov. I don't
know which containers are used on the discs. Can anybody enlighten me
about that? My guess would be mp4.

I don't know any HD samples with surround sound-does anybody?
I don't think the computer has any difficulty playing the footage. My
MacBook can play "anything" on the plasmascreen with graphic-chip intel
GMA950 on the motherboard, showing the screen on the Mac at the same time.
The question for Linux must be the software and the codecs.

Is there a HD-Player for Linux? And what are the plans for getting hold of
the material?

thanks for the info! My multimedia computer was able to play the WMV
videos smoothly although without sound (I guess the specific codec is
missing).

I have no idea if there's already a HD-Player for Linux. I was just
curious if the computer is capable of HD playback. I think I'll wait
until the HD-DVD vs Blueray format war has ended before I buy a new HD
drive.
