I hope this question has some relevance to this group.
A family member has been talking about getting a DVD recorder -- ostensibly to replace VHS recording, but also for one-touch copying from VHS to DVD; this for a Christmas present. Now she mentions that ASDA have a VHS-DVD combi. I'm unkeen about cheapo Hi-fi or video item from a supermarket. Also, I have a cheap hard disk Freeview recorder and it's the bees-knees. So, the question. Does the following make any sense for a non-Freeview area? That is, can it satisfactorily record analogue channels? It looks like the VHS-DVD criterion is met. Panasonic DMR-EZ47 - DVD Recorder & VCR Combination - With 1080P Up-Conversion & Freeview (available at Amazon.co.uk). TIA, Jon C. |

However, it seems to me that the Sky-connected TV is monopolised by the children and that recording from it would be infrequent. Still, ability to operate with Sky might be worth having --- if I'm not talking complete nonsense. Jon C. |

The EZ47 has no DTTV tuner, so it will be obsolete in the not too distant future. The EZ95 has both an analogue & digital tuner but does cost a bit more. However it should carry on being useful for many years. -- From KT24 - in "Leafy Surrey" Using a RISC OS computer running v5.11 |

The EZ95 has both an analogue & digital tuner but does cost a bit more. However it should carry on being useful for many years. EX95? If so, at ~£450 it's too expensive. Best regards, Jon C. |

Also that there is nothing affordable with an analogue tuners. Probably makes sense --- analogue tuner = expensive electronics to scrunch the video down into something recordable. Best regards, Jon. As far as I know, all Panasonic Combis have analogue and digital
tuners but it is not that obvious as, if you are in an area which can receive both, the analogue channels are stored in the hign numbers above the digital channels. If you go to BBC1 digital and step downwards you will come across the analogue channels. There are plenty of combi recorders around which meet the original spec required, ie not for a digital area. Most of the cheaper ones seem to be made by Funai and and can have very poorly designed, over complicated handsets others based on Samsung which are a bit better to use. Daewoos, although fairly cheap are not bad to use. The new model samsung has A and D tuners and digtal will be vital in the next few years even if not immediately. Anything will record from Sky in basic fashion but will need timer setting and the Sky box will have to be left on one channel during recording. Really there is nothing to beat Sky plus for convenience and ability to record one channel whilst watching another. Feed its output to other TVs and it becomes quite flexible but it can only generate one thing at a time for viewing. Hope this helps. |

There is no separate switch to change between analogue and digital tuners. Even the one I mentioned originally? I.e. Panasonic DMR-EZ47 - DVD Recorder & VCR Combination - With 1080P Up-Conversion & Freeview (available at Amazon.co.uk). I suppose I'm wondering then why there is an EX95 model at ~£450 that advertises itself as having both analogue and digital tuners. A reviewer of the item below states clearly that it has no analogue channel, not that Amazon reviews are much to go by. Panasonic DMR-EX77EB-K - 160GB Hard Drive DVD Recorder - With 1080P Up-Conversion & Freeview - Black. Best regards, Jon C. |
