Lack of interest because their use becomes loss of revenue to the Cable
Companies. Presumably the research will continue into the possibility of CCX2 but will the suppliers (CATV Companies) actually want to impliment them? "rosede" wrote in message ... Has there been any word on when CC2 will be released? Thanks. Daryl |

Daryl Don't know about Cable Card 2.0, but there was press release today on a fix to allow HD Tivos to provide 2 way communication to work with cable systems adapting Switched Digital Video (SDV). 2nd quarter of 2008? Maybe. See http://www.multichannel.com/article/...dustryid=47194. http://www.broadcastingcable.com/ind...leID=CA6505106 Alan F |

"rosede" wrote in message ... Has there been any word on when CC2 will be released? CableCard 2.0 is protocol and firmware, not hardware. It is in use now. The reason for 2.0 is to allow bi-directional communication, so things like IPG and VOD will work with CableCards. All STBs that are being shipped by cable companies currently actually have CableCards inside. They come pre-packaged and sealed inside the STBs. The issue you are probably getting at is when third party vendors will be releasing products compatible with CableCards. The hold-up is that cable companies (ostensibly) do not want to allow hardware on their network that might muck it up. Therefore, they are requiring that any third party hardware have the cable company's firmware installed on the box to manage the interface between the cable network and the STB. Of course, the whole point of third party devices is to allow for innovation and to replace the dreck that the cable companies put out. What good would a TiVo box be if it had the cable company interface? It is in the interest of the cable companies to keep this situation going as long as possible, so they can continue to essentially monopolize the hardware market and get tons of revenue from STB rental fees. As soon as cable service becomes analogous to internet service, where it is just a connection and not an environment, they lose out big time. steveo |
