Hi...
I'm looking into dvrs and was wondering if there were any Tivos that don't require the monthly subscription? As jazzy as the recommender and tv guide are, I don't really need them or the extra expense. Just looking for a digital replacement for the vcr. Amazon has the tivo hd on sale, but it doesn't say anything about the subscription. A lot of the series 2 and 3 listings say something about a rebate from Tivo with subscription, but the hd doesn't have that either. Thanks Mark |

Most (almost safe to assume all) of the Series1 TiVos do not need a subscription. Also, the Pioneer and Toshiba TiVo/DVD combo boxes come with TiVo Basic so don't need subscriptions (the Humax TiVo/DVD combo box does not come with TiVo Basic so does need a subscription though). Amazon has the tivo hd on sale, but it doesn't say anything about the subscription. It won't work without a subscription. -- This is my .sig |

I'd like to suggest that what you are looking for ISN'T a Tivo. It's a DVR with a hard disk (which includes a bunch of things that aren't Tivos, and some Tivos, but which still work great as a substitute for a VCR. Some of them can burn DVDs, also. Amazon has the tivo hd on sale, but it doesn't say anything about the subscription. A lot of the series 2 and 3 listings say something about a rebate from Tivo with subscription, but the hd doesn't have that either. As I understand it, the Tivo HD requires a subscription. Some Tivo Series 1 can be used as time-and-channel recorder without a subscription. I suggest that if that's what you want it for, a non-Tivo might do what you want for a better price. |

As jazzy as the recommender and You can reasonably assume that any new TiVo you get will require a subscription. (Some really old second hand ones and some third party boxes with "TiVo basic" software don't, but you're less likely to come across them). tv guide are, I don't really need them or the extra expense. Just looking for a digital replacement for the vcr. If you don't specifically need direct recording from a "cablecard" then you might be better off looking at a "build your own" solution using mythtv or Windows Media Center Edition. It's a more "techie" solution and harder to do, but if you're comfortable with DIY solutions then this will meet your stated needs without any subscription requirements. Amazon has the tivo hd on sale, but it doesn't say anything about the subscription. The TiVoHD needs a subscription. -- Stephen Harris The truth is the truth, and opinion just opinion. But what is what? My employer pays to ignore my opinions; you get to do it for free. |

Thanks Mark If all you want is a DVR with a guide, then you probably do NOT want a tivo (that is a trademarked name).... there are several dvr's that use other software... Sice you say you are looking into dvr's, why are you looking only for tivo's? For instance, I have 5 DVR's, but only 2 are tivo's (other 3 are all toshiba's)...... You may want to check these out from toshiba (the multi-drive with hard disk ones are dvr's, sorry I only have toshiba's so that's all I can point you to quickly)... The ones with hard disks use the online TV guide for setting recordings http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/dvr/dvdrecorder.asp |

I assume not, since I believe that it needs some type of program guide to record, using season pass?? Or can you just use the Chan & Time recording similar to a VCR?? I have a good friend that had bought a Panasonic DVR with a built in DVD recorder. And paid around $500.00 for it new. It used the TV Guide program guide, but was analog. And as I understand it from him, he was told that it would no longer work since TV Guide will now only do digital now. So the TV Guide portion of this machine, that he only bought about two yrs. ago is useless in that respect. But I believe he can still set it like a VCR. |

Was that a misstep on TIVOs part?? Some think so but I think overall, no. From TiVo's wiki: This is due to an FCC mandate that all devices sold after March 2007 with an NTSC tuner must also contain an ATSC tuner. TiVo therefore had to choose between adding ATSC support, or removing NTSC support. With the S2DT they opted to remove NTSC, the Series3 supports NTSC and ATSC, along with digital cable channels (with CableCards). -- This is my .sig |
