I am considering a new TiVo box -- one that supports external eSATA hard
drives. Even though S2 boxes are free from time to time (service agreement notwithstanding), it does not make sense to buy an S2 at this point in time. My question is whether or not S3 boxes support analog SDTV cable signals and SDTV OTA broadcasts. My cable bills are too high now with basic service, so I do not plan to subscribe to cable-based HDTV. I also do not want to deal with an external cable box. Some day, I may be forced to buy and HDTV TV and go to an old-fashioned roof or attic antenna, but, for now, I am stuck with cable. Will an S3 meet my needs? Will the image quality for an SDTV broadcast be as good on an S3 as on an S2? One other question: Does TiVo Desktop / TTG support S3 yet? If not, is there a target date for S3 support? David |

"Comcast Newsgroups" shaped the electrons to say:
My question is whether or not S3 boxes support analog SDTV cable signals and SDTV OTA broadcasts. My cable bills are too high now with basic service, so Yes to both. The Series3 and the TiVo HD both support analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC) antenna as well as analog and digital cable, SD and HD. Will an S3 meet my needs? Will the image quality for an SDTV broadcast be as good on an S3 as on an S2? As good if not better. One other question: Does TiVo Desktop / TTG support S3 yet? If not, is there a target date for S3 support? Yes, the latest software update enabled TTG. -MZ -- megazone-at-megazone.org http://www.MegaZone.org/ Gweep, Geek, Human, me. http://www.TiVoLovers.com/ http://www.Eyrie-Productions.com/ -- Hail Eris "A little nonsense now and then, is relished by the wisest men" 508-852-2171 |

Buying an S3 doesn't make a lot of sense since they came out with the Tivo- HD priced at $299, compared to the S3 at $799. But either will do what you want. They both also support NTSC and ATSC OTA broadcast. One other question: Does TiVo Desktop / TTG support S3 yet? If not, is there a target date for S3 support? Are you implying you can't buy a new one anywhere or just not from tivo.com? See how murky reality is, yet you simply state "You can't by a new one now." which appears as a fact, but isn't correct. Thank you, Megazone, Wes, Mike, for your replies.
BTW, Mike is correct about S2s. They are still sold by liquidators and retailers with old stock. Recently, fatwallet.com pointed to offers where you actually made money after rebates. The net result is that they are paying you to take the S2s. Of course you still would need to buy a TiVo subscription. David D. Well, who discontinued it? RCA? Hell no, Tivo. What some marketeer may have done isn't my concern. They shouldn't be on the market anywhere in the US, except possibly as discontinued items with disclaimers of their functionality. And if I'd been talking about an S2DT, I'd have written S2DT, not just S2. The S2DT is the current model of Series 2 recorder and is available pretty much everywhere. Wes was doing David a disservice by not mentioning the S2DT. -Joe |
