I'm going to try and use ANSI to show how my finished basement area
looks like where my HDTV and surround sound system will go: __________________________________________ front of basement with built in entertainment center ----------------------------HDTV------------------------------------ |||| 10 feet between TV and back of sofa | wall of stairs |||| 12 foot wide area | which lead to ============================== | main floor of ====| | house | 10 foot wide area | half | | bath | | | | ====| Hopefully the graphics posts well. I know that 2 speakers go behind the sofa. woofer underneath TV. 2 more speakers next to the tv. where do the other 2 speakers go in a 7.1 system? and is my layout a decent layout for a home theater system? |

ok that graphics stinks but here's what it's supposed to look like:
front of basement has a built in entertainment center. tv will be in the center. house stairs on the right. to the left is a 10 foot long recessed area between entertainment center and half bath. from recessed area wall to stairs' wall is 12 feet. sectional sofa will go in this 10x12 section. will be viewing at about 7-8 feet away. is this a good setup for a home theatre? i'll have to put the speakers on the stairs wall and the wall at the recessed area? so those speakers are 12 feet apart is that good? if i put the speakers behind the sofa then i can put one on the half bath wall and the stairs wall and that's 10 feet apart. which is better? |

OK, those left/right back and surround speakers, can they be on pedestals? |

OK, those left/right back and surround speakers, can they be on pedestals? All speakers should be around ear level. The front speakers do better placed near the level of the screen, and the rear (both sets of rear surround speakers) do well at or above ear level. So pedestals is a good idea for those. Wall mounting is useful sometimes (though not always practical) and ceiling mounting is acceptable provided you can direct the speakers toward the seating/viewing area(s). |

Satellite speaker stands, that's it! Yes we have a small child and 2
cats but that's not too much of an issue. We do have a drop down ceiling in the basement so I could always put the speakers up there somehow. Thanks again! |

Try hanging the speakers from the ceiling, against the side and back walls, about 1 meter above ear level. If that works (and it should), you don't have to buy pedestals. Here is my room layout: http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/315/basementlk8.gif
The rear speakers will be mounted on the drop ceiling or on pedestals. The only issue is the left rear speakers, they will be on top of whomever is sitting there. The sofa is going to be a tight fit in that corner, I could probably move it away from the corner about 1 foot. What do you think about this setup? I don't have much choice. |

I wish I had a room like that. Even in the room I have (built on slab) I cannot run wires to rear speakers. I think you really need a 7.1 system at $500 per speaker. Have you considered robbing a bank? Maybe you could sell you wife into slavery. |
