Default Seeking advice for our first HDTV

Hello all,

We don't play video games and watch movies, regular TV shows and hd
cable shows.

We'd like to get something for $1,000 between 42" to 50". We will be
sitting about 7-8 feet away. It will be in our finished basement so
no glare from daylight.

Is 780p the way to go for us given the above? Or 780p won't be good at
our distnace above 46" perhaps?

We're deciding between Plasma or DLP.

The only DLP we can afford is the Samsung 50" slim DLP at Circuit City
which will be on sale on Black Friday for $799 (http://
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsu... d=k39085&mid=)
Is this a good one?

We don't know which Plasma to get as there are some decent sales/
brands. Any suggestions?

Does either Plasma or DLP have good viewing angles?

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about the geometry. Either 1080 or 720 will do in your
circumstance. Let the price be your guide.

I don't have any. I went through this calculus and decided on DLP. I'm
very happy with that decision.

Plasma wins on the viewing angle, but don't put too much weight on that
unless you really need to view from an extreme angle. Most modern RPTVs
have excellent off axis viewing. Most people don't put their primary
viewing positions very far off axis from the display. If you intend to,
then plasma may be better for your application.

Thanks!

You're welcome.

Matthew,

I'm thinking DLP is the way to go because you can replace the bulb.
You can't replace anything with Plasma, once it goes, it goes. So to
me that's a worthwhile invest for DLP vs Plasma.

Do you notice any rainbow affect with your DLP?

Thanks again!

Also, DLP displays can be had for a lot less money for the size of the
screen.

Do you notice any rainbow affect with your DLP?

Yes, but only when bright white objects are on the screen. It only
happens when I look away, not while I'm watching so it doesn't bother me.

DLP is great for the consumer level. My kitchen is off to the side and
if I have to, I can still see what's going on at a nearly flat angle.
Three years ago, my consideration was maxing out the screen size I
could get for the same depth of my 19" tube (61"), and the technology
has only gotten thinner since then.

Yes, I know I went too large, but it made for a great lilttle stand-up
routine.

Consider a Philips or Magnavox refurbished unit. An excellent value
and a NCA 30-day refund policy: http://tinyurl.com/9gqha

This is where I bought my first HDTV.

Plasmas are energy hungry. Electrical use is about twice that of LCD or
DLP. IMO, DLP is the way to go for larger screens although I went with LCD
for the HDTV in the bedroom. At 42" I'd call it a toss up with DLP being
maybe a little cheaper overall. I wouldn't even consider plasma in any
size. A 60" plasma uses about 600W. DLP will be about half that. I think
you'll be happy with the picture quality of any HDTV.

Look around...there are other deals out there.
www.blackfriday.info
Sears and Target have some deals also.
If you watch alot of TV, go with LCD, longer life.
If you need a big picture, go with DLP, but you have to budget the cost of
bulb replacement.
Personally, my favorite is a Mitsubishi DLP. No rainbow effect at all, due
to 6 segment color wheel, and the bulb is guaranteed for a year after
purchase. Check the warranty on other DLP/LCOS brands, some offer only a 90
day warranty on the original bulb.
YMMV

Thanks again everyone and Deke and Wes especially. Now I'll definitely
go with DLP for the energy savings.

Ah Mitsubishi huh? I'll take a look around and see what I can find.
Mitsubishi or Samsung are the 2 I'll stick with I think I've heard
good things about them both.
