"Bill Wright" wrote in message ... "Adrian C" wrote in message ... Bill Wright wrote: His joke telling was **** poor, and I would not have believed that anyone could attempt to earn a living as a comedian when they were not intelligent enough to tell jokes properly. What a waste of an evening. Maybe you missed the irony in the performance Bill? Wasn't he performing the actions of a deranged character? One that the audience should have taken the **** out of... but due his poor performance that night, probably going over the top and maybe getting some sympathy from some BNP nutters in the crowd, the type of humor so well done by Alf Garnet (Warren Mitchell) didn't present itself. How many hecklers were present? Did they have enough beer to drink before the performance started? There was one heckler at the start, who objected to the (totally unfunny) racism. The heckler walked out. Maybe we should have done the same, but I was a sort of invited guest of the people I was with and it would have spoilt their evening. Bill But did anybody laugh? Nothing gets a "comedian" off stage quicker than an audience that looks the other way. If enough of the audience joined him in his puerile attempt at being funny then there would have been no stopping him. Unfortunately (I assume) there were enough similarly-inclined bigots in the crowd to feed him. A mass walk-out is the only cure, I'm afraid. Not only does it send a strong message to the performer but also to the dozy landlord that booked him - hitting him where it hurts the most - in his pocket. Doubt he'd do it again....... Chas |

The comedian came on and his first line was "Are there any ****in' Pakis in here? If so, **** off!" After that the act went downhill. He went on to insult every ethnic group in the world, women, homosexuals, the pub, the town, the people behind the bar, and each member of the audience (individually). His joke telling was **** poor, and I would not have believed that anyone could attempt to earn a living as a comedian when they were not intelligent enough to tell jokes properly. What a waste of an evening. I just had to tell you this, to get it off my chest. I'm off to bed in disgust. Bill Someone should have done the decent thing and tipped a pint of beer on his head, but I suppose that would have been a waste of fine bitter :-o) Regards Mike. No, it would have been a waste of appalling chilled 'lager'. That's all there was. Bill I'm sorry, but I would've walked out at that point. No handpumps, no me! Marky P. |

"Nigel Cliffe" wrote in message ... Sounds like a quick replacement with extracts from "Rigger's Diary" would have gone down a lot better, even with an audience who little/nothing about aerials and transmission. Well in fact there was an incident which happened because I couldn't stand it any longer and I got involved. I decided not to report it because my original post was brought about by a feeling of dispair about the evening and also it would have taken a lot of explaining, and I was tired. The other problem is that there's no way I can tell it without sounding like I'm blowing my own trumpet. But having told a few people about the evening verbally without feeling like a ****, maybe I'll tell the tale. Bill |

"Simon" wrote in message ... Name the venue. If you can't you are a liar. I don't see why I should respond to this. What's more I can't see the reason for it. What point are you attempting to make? Is it so extraordinary to visit a rough estate pub in a Sheffield suburb and find that they have engaged the services of a bad comedian? For anyone who wants to avoid this pub, please email me and I'll send you the details. Bill |

Not only does it send a strong message to the performer but also to the dozy landlord that booked him - hitting him where it hurts the most - in his pocket. Doubt he'd do it again....... Well, you know, it was rather odd, and I think it said something about the British working class's confusion about PC and racism. They did laugh, to some extent, actually much more than the jokes deserved. I think it was because racism has been proscribed by the ruling and chattering classes, so there was an element of naughtiness about it. It was really rather like schoolkids laughing at bad jokes about sex, because it was naughty. There was an air of shared naughtiness. I think a lot of people have dual morality here, like the arms dealer in Pygmalian who kept his two moralities in watertight compartments. The live and work with Asians and negros and get on with them, but they will go to a pub and laugh at poor racist comedy material. The comedian was even more offensive about things other than race. He was appalling about disability and mental health. The odd thing, though, is that the material he used there was broadcastable, despite being grossly offensive. As a result it wasn't as well received as the racist material. That says something about the ruling/chattering classes extreme sensitivity to race issues as against other discrimination issues, and possibily about how counter-productive it is. Bill |
