Plasma doesn't have "smearing" across the picture due to poor refresh rates. Plasma only lasts about 5 years and then you might aswell bin it - plus the dogs used on some channels get burnt in to the screen. Whatever you do, search using the price comparison sites. If it's anywhere like Currys be aware of their dual pricing that cons people calling in to the shops. You can often go home, order via the net and return to collect for hundreds less - from the same shop. It drives the staff mad. Avoid extended warranties, if the TV breaks within 12months it will be fixed. If it breaks after that then there is an argument to say a TV can reasonably be expected to last more than 12months. The company will be in touch after 11 months to offer you a warranty anyway. No point paying for one in parallel to the manufacturers warranty. Make sure you watch the LCD using maybe a DVD of fast moving pictures. Make one up of video clips from the TV. Anything with "XD engine" - avoid, they are years behind in terms of technology. If you like football or tennis forget it. You see the ball only when it lands or stops and the background becomes a solid colour until the camera stops moving. Also watch the news with moving text on the bottom of the screen, some LCDs show it blurred. You will be quite annoyed with LCD if you get the wrong make and model. Cheap ones are often rubbish. Check all the reviews. |

As always plasma provides better image/video quality than LCDs. However, plasmas are extremely expensive. Interesting all the experts me to get LCD. HD 1080 if i do not watch football, in that case to get the MD one. Regards David |

"mike o'sullivan" wrote in message ... Buying a new 42" tv soon and can not decide between the two technologies. Any opinions would be welcome. All Toshiba models I've seen are absolute crap. Panasonic are best for Plasma and Sony are the only make with decent quality LCD displays with uniform illumination and black which looks black. Don't expect anything to last more than 5 years. You'll be lucky if you get 3 years normal viewing, 12 hours a day. At the present moment in time the prices are a complete and utter rip-off. Expect to pay £3000 for a decent quality HD 1080p display. Do not buy any of the 720p displays because they are cheep since this is not really high definition and you can find a CRT screen of the same size for 1/4 of the price (£200) which will give you a better picture and last twice as long. If you don't need a new TV don't buy anything untill the time comes when you can get a Sony/Panasonic 1080p display for £800. Remember NO national HDTV service exists at present or is likely to come into being before 2012, and then it will probably only be on Satellite, so you are wasting you money whatever you buy. |

Worth a read: http://www.pioneer.co.uk/files/eur/P...whitepaper.pdf But what is the real conclusion? Is Plasma better than LCD or do Pioneer and Panasonic make crap LCD TVs? -- Alan news2006 {at} amac {dot} f2s {dot} com |

I hope my CRT lasts a few more years until flat screens come down to the price that reflects their true cost (bearing in mind the shipping advantage of flat screens v CRT). Less copper, glass, components, etc |

Sony are the only make with decent quality
LCD displays with uniform illumination and black which looks black. Interesting as Sony LCDs seem to come from Samsung roots according to a recent bit of inside information. Sound is not as good as some either. |

My personal choice would be plasma every time, remembering that
plasmas don't go much below 42". So smaller would have to be LCD. Hitachi did make smaller plasmas but not now, as far as I know. Hitachi have done some interesting research on the pros and cons of plasma/LCD. It is quite unbiased as they are one of the few companies that actually manufacture both types of panel themselves. They have copies available. Probably on the net somewhere. |

A friends query in a Sony shop recently proved that. |
