Anybody add an external hard drive via the USB 2.0 feature on the Dish
VIP622? How about the VIP722? I have both. Any advice? Can I just pick up any external hard drive with USB 2.0 and plug it in? The price for adding 500GB seems pretty reasonable. |

I don't think much of the $39.99 activation fee. "Mark Malone" wrote in message . net... Anybody add an external hard drive via the USB 2.0 feature on the Dish VIP622? How about the VIP722? The only thing to be aware of is that you need to use a drive with its own power supply and the drive has to be between 60 and 750 GBs. Do not get a drive that has several interfaces (like firewire and USB 2.0), the extra interfaces are just a waste of money. The only drives that I am aware that people have had problems with are the drives that have the "sleep" feature (like the Seagate FreeAgent models). If you use one of them you need to install it on a PC first and set the "sleep mode" to "never". Also, you should be aware that once you format the drive for use on the ViP receiver you can not read its files on a PC (they are encrypted). You can use as many drives as you wish on the receiver, but only one at a time (a USB hub won't work). For the money, a 500 GB drive is currently your best deal. I have seen a few that are about $110 - $130 and they will likely be cheaper for the Christmas selling season. -- Bill R. Remove nospam_ in e-mail address to reply by e-mail |

I have used a USB stick to show photos loaded from my computer with out
paying the $39.00 fee. What irks me more than the one time fee is that I am paying for HD and local channels. I get all their HD satellite stations ok but the locals I pay for are SDTV. Not HD. They recently added scads of sports HD channels but they are extra too. I was able to merge my OTA HD signals but the Guide doesn't list the programming for the piggy-back OTA stations. I'm already paying $132.00/mo. I suppose I could sell my house to afford everything but where would I put the antenna? On top of the cardboard crate?
