Default DirecTV Tivo & new HDTV channels

Once upon a time, Peter Pan said:

The only really annoying thing about Comcast is that they don't carry
HDNet and HDNet Movies, and I watch stuff there regularly. I'd go
with Knology (I think they have every channel I watch on DirecTV
currently) but they charge a bunch for CableCARDs.

Not sure what HDnet is, but just got two cablecards for the tivo/comcast/HD
stuff, and they are 1.99 a month..... I don't consider a buck 99 a "bunch"

HDNet and HDNet Movies are two only-in-HD channels (see www.hd.net).
Comcast doesn't carry them (while lots of other cable and satellite
providers do).

I know Comcast doesn't charge that much for CableCARDs. Knology is a
different cable company, and from what I understand, they charge the
same for a CableCARD as they do for an HD box (they apparently just
don't want to mess with CableCARD).

I've talked to three DirecTV people on the phone (one supervisor) and
exchanged email with another person. The best they offered me is $199 +
two year service commitment + free HD package for a year (I own my HR10
so they don't want it). I may still take it, but I'm seriously
considering just going back to Comcast and getting a TiVo HD (especially
now that supported external storage and TTG have arrived).

Telling me that I could get the HR20 without a commitment for $750 is
just plain rude, especially when I have already pointed out that I can
own a box with similar (or really better!) functionality for $299.

I just got off the phone with DirecTV, and got a reasonable upgrade.

After pressing "0" to the voice response unit, I got connected to a real
person, and asked her about an upgrade from an old HD recorder to a new
HD recorder. She said I was eligible for an "HD swap" and told me to
mention that to the Installation Department, to which I was transfered.

The pleasant-sounding guy there lamented the misinformation that the
front-line operators were giving out. "They give out the good news and
I have to give bad news." The "HD swap" would allow me to switch from
the HR10 (or just about anything else) to an H20 (non-recording HD receiver).
The free swap for long-time customers does not encompass upgrading to
a new HD recorder.

For the HD recorder (HD20), I'd have to pay the $299 activation fee, but
he could eliminate the monthly DVR fee and the monthly HDTV fee for a year,
which is worth about $192. And he could throw in two newer receivers (D11) or
two SD recorders. I asked for one of each. [The standalone receiver will
be feeding my Series 2 Dual Tuner TiVo, so I'll still have the TiVo features.]

I need to call in and press them on this issue too.

I don't want one of their PVRs.

I would go back to using a DirecTivo perhaps. Being able to use
MythTV would be even better. Either way, I don't want my PVR tied to my
cable provider.

There are some highly expensive after market options that
enable firewire but I am not quite that eager to record HDTV just
yet.

Beg to differ.

I just upgraded from an HR10, which I still have, to an HR20.

I got the HR20 for free, the order entry charge ($24.95?) free, new dish
and multi switch, installation, 3 months HBO, Starz, Cinemax, Showtime,
12 month $5 credit for when some HD channels move to their own package
in Dec.

As soon as a live person comes on ask for Retention (retain old
customers). If you don't like what they say, call back later, until you do.

Harvey

PS Anybody want to buy an HR10 with upgraded HDD and fully hacked
(zippered)?
