Default Samsung Screen Blotch

I have a Samsung HL-T5676S and I am very pleased with the picture
quality. There is a minor annoyance with the screen. When the TV is
off, I can see an irregular band/shade/blotch around the periphery of
the screen. I cannot see this band when there is a picture on the
screen.

I called Samsung and they sent a service tech to look at it. The
service tech thought it was a problem with warping of the TV frame and
chassis. I also went to Best Buy and Sears to find that EVERY TV on
display Samsung and Sony Rear Projection TV have this band around the
periphery to a greater or lesser extent.

Does anyone else see this issue and think if it is a problem at all?

Thanks for your input.

Yup, there's a faint "blotch" near the center of our JVC LCoS when it's off.

Probably room light entering through the screen then being focused back
from the mirrored surfaces inside. It doesn't interfere with viewing an
image with the set on. I ignore it.

If this "analysis" is correct, the issue could be suppressed by
increasing the gray dye in the screen, then increasing the brilliance of
the source lamp, spending more bucks on electrical power etc. etc.
Every design has its engineering trade-offs. Analogous to the 'black
matrix' and faceplate tinting games we played with early shadow-mask CRTs.

Sort of like that faint vertical line on early Trinitron CRTs due to the
support wire inside the tube. Not "perfect" but not visible under
normal viewing conditions.

So let me get this right -- you watch your TV when it's off. Hmmmm I
bet it saves energy but it's on odd way to reduce global warming.

No doubt some of his viewing is better than with the set switched on. ;-)

I was actually trying to project an image from my mind onto the screen
(the TV has to be off for this to happen). That's how I found the
flaw

Thanks to all for clarifying the screen issue.

Many RPTV devices, as well as DLD and LCD Projection sets exibit this
symptom when viewed with normal amounts of ambient lumination shining on
them. As posted, the mirror reflects the light back out of the set. Normal
Design.
