Because installation of a satellite system implies that the viewer's
intelligence has been "turned" by murdoch.

I bought the recent fixed satellite kit from Lidl and I'm pretty certain
no online dealer could match the price (60 quid) including carriage. Nor
am I confident you'll get decent advice from an online dealer anyway.

Are you saying you'll get decent advice from Lidl?

The 'advice' is the fitting instructions. So exactly the same as something
bought on line.

And you'll find plenty of advice on lining up satellite dishes by Googling
anyway.

The days of expecting and getting *any* decent advice from a retailer are
long since gone.

The Lidl receiver is great value and is good for reception of Astra 2
and many other satellites.
It is generally simple to use and works well with disec switching etc.
The problems are that it cannot receive Channels 4 and 5 and E4, E4
more etc and, of course, any of the subscription channels.
They will, however receive many channels that terrestrial Freeview
boxes will not.

They can be good for older people, but only if you spend a long time
removing all of the unwanted scrambled channels from the list. When
this is done, the user only needs to scroll through what is left to
make their choice.
In the end, apart from the ch4/5 problem this makes it even easier
than a Sky box as that does not allow you to remove unwanted channels
(and the "favourites" system is still too much for some people to
understand--I know, I deal with older customers much of the time.)

In extreme cases I often open the remote handset and put small pieces
of tape under some of the buttons so they don't get pressed by
accident. (This confuses the hell out of anyone else who tries to do
anything with it later, though, so I usually put a note to this effect
inside the battery compartment.)

The down side of usint this and other non-Sky receivers is that they
do not auto update channel changes and additions so you have to do it
manually from time to time. Also the programme guide is limited to
"now and next" and the "red button services do not work"

A dish will work in a large, thin-walled plastic compost bin and also
behind frosted corrugated plastic roofing sheets. Its best to arrange
it with the corrugations running top to bottom so water and leaves
fall off. You can make a simple "A" frame like a plant cloche. If the
dish is mounted very low on a paving slab it doesn't have to be too
big. Best to avoid the flat twin wall sheeting, but that is too
transparent anyway.

Do you think your Mum will want to watch anything other than the basic
channels? The novelty soon wears off you know. After DSO she will have
BBC1-4, Parliament, ITV1-4, More 4, E4, Film 4, Dave, a host of shopping
channels, several news channels, and any radio she wants except
ClassicFM. Isn't that enough - at 80+???

Ooh, that's a little ageist isn't it? :-)
