When I bought my CRT HDTV it was a discontinued model that I got for a
good price. My wife and I would like to get a new big screen but the 1080p's are still a little pricey. Is there a time when new models come out so I can then look for last years models on close-out? Or do the mfg's release new models sporadically throughout the year? Thanks!! Eddie G |

Eddie G Most of the new models come out in the spring in the U.S. but there are a lot of exceptions to that statement. I've seen at least half a dozen models introduced late this summer and this fall. In the last few years the best time to get a good deal on a HDTV was right after the holidays. A lot of stores clear them out then to make way for the new models. -- Bill R. Remove nospam_ in e-mail address to reply by e-mail |

Eddie G Sharp has some pretty heavy markdowns now on their 1080p sets. They have four distinct lines of LCD sets. The price leader is an all-new set. JVC has introduced slightly larger screens on their ILA projection sets (56 goes to 58, 60 goes to 61 etc.) The 56 and 60 are 1080p, have more input options and were about $800 less than the 58" and 61" in the store. Great pricing...bought one of each. If you are into football or soccer, take a close look at the 60" and 70" JVC during 1080i and 720p broadcasts. JVC handles motion artifact suppression differently than other brands--personally, I like it. Some HD techno-buffs might not. For the Sharp Aquos take a hard look at the shadow areas in the picture. I think Sharp was shooting for great blacks and they achieved! We're still playing with settings. -- pete |

Eddie G I'd think sporadically. They're always after the edge, to a lesser extent accounting seasonal and/or promotional sales. Besides, if they've got the "edge" (Sharp, Sony, or a "better-make" reputability), it's more a discretionary matter how much they're willing to cut off a premium people will pay to be within that margin of quality they're already known for and capable of commanding. Research and development offering the most features for the value is what makes a new model, even quality name manufacturers, at any given time, must be aware of for competitive hot marketing upstarts and directions. The model is only a summary of features and reviews for a value respectfully submitted -- a time frame shortly to be eclipsed as developments unfold. |

Eddie G Sony and Samsung recently came out with new models. If you can still find a Sony XBR2 or XBR3 or Samsung 4065/4665 you can probably get a good price. While these are not the cheapest you can find, they are high quality products. |
