Default Annoying BBC "red button" captions on Freeview

In the past I've seen these pop up for a brief period, then disappear. In
today's England match on BBC1 the "Live Snooker" option caption was
irritatingly shown throughout the match. Is there a way to kill such
annoying bits of screen clutter? I've tried obvious key presses to no avail.

You need to disable MHEG. Which box?

The Green button kills them on my Sony receivers. Better still I've switched
off MHEG completely on my Toppy PVR.

Works on my Sony TV, my old Sony freeview box, Panasonic TV, DVD-RAM and
Humax (I think). Seems to be a pretty universal way of getting rid of
the prompt.

Menu System setting Interactive Services Disable

It needs to be on firmware version 5.12.25 or above though,

Thanks Mark, wish I'd known that before. Previously I had the Ferguson
FDT2000, I now have the Sagem 62160SL and that works on the latter

Its a pity we can't turn all the other **** off as well, then we might
be able to watch the programmes in peace.

Try the Standby button :-)

One thing I wish we could disable is the woman doing sign language on
programmes shown late at night on some channels. More than once I've
recorded a movie only to find it un-watchable for that reason.

Why it's necessary I don't know, when there are switchable subtitles
available.
