B sounds like it was recorded through a toilet roll. Definitely the
worst.

A has much more top end, and sounds a little more natural.

OK, same again but longer, 'dual mono' tracks this time with hopefully
more information content and some applause at the end. A and B are still
the same; the recording method is exactly as before but with no
'normalisation' this time, having got the levels better matched this
time:

That's better. B is much better now. It has some sort of interference
buzzing in the background, though. Much nicer bass response, and the
top end is smoother.

OK Don, you're gonna love this one - there's no vinyl and not a single
valve in it!! :-)

Prompted by summat Arny said, I have hooked up my Fidelios to the
Technics MOSFET amp to 'revisit' them now that there's a lot more bass
coming from them - previously they have sounded crap on any SS amp I
tried! (Far too *quacky*!!).

The setup (which never changed) is as you can see in this pic:

The ribbon mic is set back a couple of feet from the speakers in a
'catch-all' position and wasn't moved at all; swapping speakers is no
harder than pressing button A or button B on the power amp!

The Fidelios are (somewhat obvious, I would have thought) A and A2; the
IMFs are B and B2.

The first tracks (A and B) were a *modern* CD which, I think fairly
demonstrates the *slurry* I can get from the IMFs on 'digital' (but not
too 'toiletty' - got to allow for the mic/room here); the A2/B2 tracks
are from a much better (French) 'Test CD'!!

The fact that you reversed your choice reinforces my belief/experience
that the music/medium has a lot do do with choice of amplification and
speakers. Whilst I can and do prefer the sound of the fidelios for a lot
of stuff, they are not as good as the IMFs for the radio when there are
voices - which can still sound 'quacky'!!

All very interesting! (No idea what the buzzing was, btw!)
