Default DVD recorder and aerial signal pass-through to tv

Can anyone help me with this problem? I have a Yamada DTR-1000HX DVD
recorder which is connected to a Samsung 19" LCD TV. Everything works
fine apart from the EPG, which never has worked, except that if I want
to just watch the tv I have to turn the DVD on or the picture is
unwatchable, very very snowy etc. Turn the DVD on and the picture is
fine on both analogue and digital. I have tried connecting the aerial
cables in different ways but with no improvement.
I have run the aerial to the digital in of the DVD and then linked the
digital out to the analogue in and the analogue out to the TV. I've
also tried it the other way round. I have tried ignoring the DVD's
analogue signal and taken the digital out to the TV but no difference.
The Pioneer DVD-R which replaced the Yamada as the main set has setting
for aerial pass-through, which I suspect is the problem, but I can find
no similar setting for the Yamada. I can live with this problem but I'd
much rather not have to turn the DVD on every time I want to watch the
TV. Anyone know of a possible way around this?

Thanks for reading this and thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

Might be a silly reply but.... When you say that you have to turn on the DVD
recorder, do you mean that you have to turn it fully on, or just have it on
standby? What I'm getting at is that the recorder must not be unplugged or
switched off at the mains. It has to be in standby (ie, most show a clock in
standby mode) for the signal to pass through.

I should have made that plain, my fault, the recorder is in standby and
the picture only gets through when the DVD is fully on.

It sounds like the internal supply to the RF amplifier is being switched off
when the DVD recorder is put into standby.

If you only require the aerial for recording of air and rely on the scart
for playback, then a way around it may be simply to use a low gain one in
two out set back amplifier, connecting everything up as normal 'minus DVD
recorder' from one output and taking the spare output into the DVD recorders
aerial socket.

If there is no other solution that may be the way to go. Thanks for the
suggestion.
