Very brilliant man, virtually ruined by the evil David Sarnoff at RCA, who
had a habit of ruining brilliant inventors, such as Edwin Armstrong (the
"father" of regeneration, super regeneration, superheterodyne, and FM).

Hmmmmm, 2000 lines... he is still ahead of our times!

Phil

I had forgotten about the Armstrong connection, God that was also tragic . .

1957 and he had 2007 down pat.

Of course, that "memory" thing would take 50 years to make affordable.

I remember a quote from one of the developers of ATSC at MIT about the
future in general: "It's already here except it's not generally available
and no one can afford it."

Recall Armstrong's hugh FM antenna high above the Palisades (west of the
Hudson River, across from NY) now long gone.

Wasn't there another transmitter there, on that exact site, used for
emergency after 9/11?

great video and yes he envisions HDTV and memory files; there was not
the electronics for pulling it off in 1957. If you had a 23 inch
black and white tv in your house, it was a big deal at that time.

Ken Burns covered that subject in "Empire of the Air", a very cool
documentary about the 'men who made radio' incuding Marconi, DeForest,
Armstrong, and Sarnoff.
http://tinyurl.com/39hzhy

And getting slightly off the topic of this thread but interesting as well,
WFDU FM produced a tribute broadcast to Armstrong in June, 2005 to mark the
70th anniversary of Armstrong's first public transmission of FM radio on
it's original frequency of 42.8 MHz. That's the high def version of radio in
1935!

Thanks for the link to "Empire of the Air". I have an old VHS copy of it
somewhere in a box in my storage shed and didn't realize that it was
available on DVD. Just ordered a copy from Amazon this morning! Very good
documentary, as is everything Ken Burns creates. In fact, I ordered the box
set of "The War" today as well, even though I still have it recorded on my
HD-DVR. (I just couldn't see transferring it to D-VHS, as it would probably
take 7 tapes.)

Phil
