Default Noisy DVR

I've had a Motorola QIP6416-2 DVR courtesy of Verizon for a couple of
months. It runs all the time (I guess so you can always look back at
the current channel). It seems to be making a louder and louder
whirring sound. Is this normal for this kind of machine? Should I get
the Verizon tech to check it out?

TIA.

Hard drive noise is common with DVR's. Some have quieter drives than
others. When the drive is on its last legs, it gets progressively
louder.

If you're leasing it, then yes. If you bought it, then check the fan
bearings and lubricate as needed. It could also be a HDD going bad.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not sure whether the noise is worse or
my hearing has improved. My guess is that the HD is the source-- it
speeds up and slows down (whrrrr...WHRRRR....whrrrrr) and it's
noticed only when the sound is pretty low. But at those times it's
annoying. I'll check with VZ about what happens if the tech doesn't
agree it's a problem (do they charge for the visit, etc.).
