Default topfield, lazy man, and linux

Dear All;
after much soul (and newsgroup, thank you) searching,
I've ordered a 250 Gb topfield. Should be here any day
soon.

Relevent facts;

I don't have internet access at home.
I *do* have a laptop, running linux.
I have internet access at work.

Can anyone point me at a "step-by-step"
to performing a "basic" TAP upgrade/install
of a topfield from Linux (probably
involving myStuff, as far as I can gather).

I imagine the procedure will be:

download linux software and topfield stuff
at work.

install on a USB key.

transfer to home laptop

transfer an install onto topfield.

ENJOY!

If anyone can flesh this out, or point
out brick walls, I'd be grateful.

There are many knowledgeable and helpful people here, that's for sure,
but you should ask all this in the forums at www.toppy.org.uk as well.
Anything that can be done with a Topfield has been done by someone who
posts there!

I have to say, avoid those deep waters
was part of my reason for posting.

A TAP is just a file you have to copy to the Toppy's hard disk. It is as
simple as that. Any configuration of the TAP is done on the Toppy via
set-up menus and the remote control.

The problem you may have is one associated with the basic file transfer
under Linux. Topfield only provide official software tools and USB
drivers for transferring files under Windoze - you may/will have to
find third party applications for Linux or MACs.

I too would recommend going to the www.toppy.org.uk forums.

Try here as a starting point:-
http://www.toppy.org.uk/downloads/linux.php
Often the authors or knowledgeable users post regularly to the
toppy.org.uk forums.

PS don't forget the USB B to USB A cable as you don't get one in the box

What you need is a program called puppy, which is a command line tool
for Linux that supports the Toppy protocol, and allows you to copy
files to and fro.

It's normally used on small boxes like the Linksys NSLU2, but will
compile happily on desktop Linux too. http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Puppy/HomePage

An alternative is to run ftpd-topfield, which does much the same job,
but rather than a command line tool, it essentially translates FTP
requests into the Toppy's USB protocol, so you can use whatever FTP
software you like.

We're really all quite friendly on the Toppy forums, you know...

There's a link on the Toppy.org.uk font page for "Linux tools".

Cheers,

Colin.

Not really. We're a Unix/Solaris/Linux software house :-)

Once you've got hold of puppy, then actually copying a file is fairly
simple:

puppy -c put filename.tap 'ProgramFiles\filename.tap'

In the documents library on the Toppy site there's a basic guide to
installing TAPs from Windows; worth a read, even if you're using
Linux.

To have TAPs run automatically they need to be in 'ProgramFiles\Auto
Start' which may not be there initially - you can create it yourself,
or it will be created the first time you run a TAP manually.

Note that the Toppy file system is case sensitive and the there is a
space in "Auto Start"
