Default Upconvert DVD w/ component cables?

My Toshiba HDTV has only one HDMI input and my HR20 DTV recorder owns that
spot. I'd like to swap out my old dvd player for an upconvert model for
now, but I have a question. Will upconverting close to 1080i be
accomplished over component video cables or must it be HDMI and I would be
wasting my money? Thx

I t can be done on component, but you'll have to check the specs of the
individual unit to see if it will or not.

Upconverting over component is no longer allowed; there's no technical
reason, it is a feeble attempt at anti-piracy. Everyone understands this makes
no sense at all, but there it is.

Some unsupported firmware hacks have appeared to allow it. The Oppo 970 has
been popular for this, but note that the 970 is being replaced by the 980 and
no firmware hack has appeared for it yet.

Wasting your money? That would depend on your gear, your viewing preferences,
and the thickness of your wallet. When viewing SD-DVD to an HD display the
image must be scaled either in the player or the display (or both). One might
do a better job than the other. There is no fixed rule as to which.

We are not talking night-and-day differences here. In my opinion good
deinterlacing gets you 90% what is possible from SD-DVD; different scaling
methods are an attempt to squeeze out that last few percent of image
quality. If you are fanatical about your DVDs it's worth it; otherwise not.

Simple solution: http://tinyurl.com/38a737

I've found this model to be compatible with Sony XBR2/4 and the latest
Panasonic plasmas. As with any HDMI switch however, YMMV.

Try connecting to the component outputs.

My two year old Sony does some up-conversion
when it senses a connection to component
outputs, none when the S-video output is used.

Don't know what I'm actually getting,
possibly just a progressive output but the
large screen presentation is definitely better.

Probably your best bet would be to make an
upgrade to a HiDef DVD player when the
gunfight is over.
