Hello Dave. First and foremost many thanks on your advice and help. I
do appreciate the fact you have refrained from pointing out any
grammatical errors I have made. If I do ever use the computer to
type, obviously I take time to plan and set out the content. Otherwise
i use it for research. I have a few close pals with instant message
accounts and I can only explain my poor literacy skills as sheer
laziness. When you spend all day having to be 150% correct, it's nice
to be able to just Waffle" as it were, and not worry.
Anyhow, thankyou once again, I am just off up into the
loft to try this new aerial out. To all others reading this ....Do not
worry, If it works, I need not come here to tell you. Deal??? Regards

hi zoe
yeah i knew instant messaging style when i saw it
i use internet relay chat which is the same sorta thing
and there i use all lower case for speed
and newlines instead of punctuation

But, as you've found out, Internet forums are a bit different. This
particular newsgroup system is called Usenet, and has been running since
1979. (Google-groups is just one of many gateways to it, by the way.)

You've run into this thing called "netiquette", which has grown up
mostly here in Usenet, which is a bunch of informal rules to let us get
on with each other reasonably OK. You can search on that term, if you
want. Part of that happens to be an expectation that people take a
little time to compose a coherent and punctuated message, although a
colloquial style is OK.

Anyway, despite the fuss, you're getting to the answers that you want,
so you should get the telly sorted out eventually. And as others here
have said, please do tell us if you do get it working, so that we know
that we've not been wasting our time.

Dear all,Firstly may you all accept my sincere apologies relating to
the grammatical content of my first post.I ignorantly spoke to you all
like i would on an instant messenger service. However since learning a
few important facts about this site I will in future (if I dare
return)use the correct grammar and content to the best of my ability
regarding any technical queries.
News is as follows:- I have installed my new aerial and
coax etc etc,and re-scanned my television. The result being as
follows:-Clearer picture, and 86 channels to date. Thanks all for your
advice,much appreciated.

Are you serious? Surely I have upset enough of you?? To be perfectly
honest with you,I presumed you were all aged around your thirties? I
feel quite ashamed of the way I retaliated to some of you. I was
always taught to respect my elders, and have done so,until now. I hang
my head in shame.

Alas Charles, this is a council of perfection. We live in the world of
quick, cheap, easy, and short-lived.

Its your last word that sums it up. If you are doing the work for
yourself, it's worth spending the extra time to get something a bit longer
lasting ;-)

My apologies for not conforming to your expectations. I do find you

typing, I am totally "crap" is this the correct technical term???

Normally I wouldn't bother, but only because you yourself appear
reluctant to let the matter drop, I find myself unable to resist the
temptation to ask how the phrases "like i explained" and "i was lead to
believe" can be put down to typing errors?

Can I ask, What is the significance in the wire mesh around the coax

Strange as it might seem, the full explanation is long and arcane to the*
point of stultification, but if you think about it, the cable is carrying*
electricity like any other cable. (The only difference is that the*
electricity is varying very rapidly in strength and the TV signal is*
described by these variations). Now as you probably know, electricity likes*
to find the easiest path, so if the inner core and the outer braid touch it*
will take the path thus provided, as a sort of short cut. This means, of*
course, that it won't need to go any further down the cable, so it won't get*
to the TV set at the end of it.

The explanation I've given you will annoy some members of this group, who*
will feel that I have simplied to the point of inaccuracy, but I too was*
once a teacher and I know that knowledge has to come in bite-sized chunks!

Not at all. Even with 38 years experience in broadcast engineering, I always
prefer explanations in Plain English whenever possible, and yours makes better
sense to me than some I have seen in books.

On re-reading that article, it is a bit over the top to solder the inner
connector, so I would not worry about doing that bit!

I have an amplifier and power inserter and so confuse as to what goes
where

If you mean you have an amplifier in line with your aerial, then you
shouldn't need one where you live. You may be getting too much
signal, which is causing you the problem. I live in Duloe (PE19) and
have a wideband aerial half way up my wall (didn't have a tall enough
ladder) connected straight to the telly and signal is very strong.
Amplification is not required.

Are you serious? Surely I have upset enough of you??

Good heavens no. You haven't upset us, you have delighted us! We just love
it when someone arrives and we can complain about their English. We are so
bored, you know. I've been trapped in this part of cyberspace for years and
years. If ever you want me I'll be here, unless I've nipped next door to
uk.miserable-curmudgeons.

To be perfectly honest with you,I presumed you were all aged around your

I was when I first came in here, but I'm 58 now. I'm one of the youngest.

I feel quite ashamed of the way I retaliated to some of you.

It's what we deserve.

always taught to respect my elders, and have done so,until now. I hang
my head in shame.

Well you see, newsgroups are a bit like driving on the road. Perfectly nice
people who wouldn't say 'Boo!" to a goose if they met one face to face will,
if they confront a stray goose in a newsgroup, yell abuse at it and threaten
to eat it for their Christmas dinner. It's human nature I'm afraid. At
least, that's what I say when I try to console the geese.

Bill
