It appears to be a very impressive, and widely recommended machine. But is it usable WITHOUT all the customisation and tweaking? BugBear Yes, but the tweaks do help. Dixons are selling the 250GB version for £219 + £5 delivery if you enter a promotion code of TOP30 http://www.dixons.co.uk/product.php?...amp_id=ppc_dvd Thanks for that. My research (not much) shows John Lewis have it at 249 with 2 year warrenty. http://www.johnlewis.com/Technology/...wing/DVD+and+D.... I'd (much...) rather deal with John Lewis that Dixons. Other may make different choices. Dixons don't have black, silver fromwww.firebox.com £259.95 + £3.95 delivery £7 off voucher http://www.hotukdeals.com/deal/12152...rebox-com-mini Go through Quidco for 10% off Total (I think) £227.65 Meant to say Dixons *only* have black £209 at Empire Direct for black or silver (160GB) or £245 for the 250. (don't buy the small one!) Don't buy from ED, their service sucks. Try Turbosat they often will price match if you speak nicely to them. Or SVP. It's only when things go wrong do you find how/good or bad an online retailer are. ED are the pits. |

I bought my Topfield from www.firebox.com
It's only worth doing this if you go via www.quidco.com since that saves 10% off the £259 price |

Once they'd repaired the machine, they'd have to test that it was working, and that'd mean switching it on and doing standard tests from Windows. It was just the belief the Linux *permanently* voided the warranty that'd have been the misunderstanding. When I took my laptop back to Evesham Micros, they warned me that any data might be lost and the hard drive restored to factory default. This seems to be the standard in the industry. So you need to have a working backup system, or you're asking for trouble. -- Dave Farrance |

It appears to be a very impressive, and widely recommended machine. But is it usable WITHOUT all the customisation and tweaking? OK. The consensus is "no" That really isn't true. Remember that you're asking on a usenet forum. To be smart enough to post here, even by Google Groups, you must be the kind of techie who loves fiddling with electronic devices. And therefore you're the kind of person who is likely to have TAPs installed whether they're needed or not. I'm a techie kind of person. I've experimented with several TAPs but ended up not finding any of them worth the trouble. So my Topfield has been running TAP-free for over a year and I'm extremely happy with it. Jukka Aho wrote: I wonder why they implemented it this way on the Topfield. The Dreambox (DM 7025) does overlaps with a single tuner. After all, the demuxer only needs to duplicate the data (coming from a single tuner) during the time of overlap so that the overlapping segment ends up in both files. There is no technical need for two tuners as it is the same mux and even the same channel. This is more a function of MyStuff rather than Toppy itself I expect. ISTR it's a deeper problem (or limitation) within the the Toppy itself ? I find it a nuisance. I don't recall the same limitation with Sky+ when I had that ? -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |
