Hi,
DirecTv just upgraded my HR10-250 Tivo unit to their new HR20. The HR20 is not Tivo but very similiar. I was happy with the upgrade because it gives me my local channels in HD. Is there any way to transfer data (movies etc) from the HR10-250 Tivo unit to the HR20 DirecTv DVR? By the way, so far, I haven't experienced any of the problems with the HR20 that I have seen on many of the postings. Hopefully that continues! Thanks, Darrin |

I am a long time user of the HR10-250. I have two of them (one of which I
upgraded with a larger hard drive), and really like them. I understand that there are numerous new channels that will be available this month (9/07) and October 2007 that will not be receivable with my current TiVo, but will require the HR20. Is this information correct? What new channels are involved? Which are available right now, and which are scheduled for the remainder of 2007? Will I also need a new satellite to receive the new HDTV channels? Is DirecTV offering any type of upgrade, hopefully free, to those of us who are using the HR10-250? Lastly, as I am a big fan of the Tivo interface, how does the HR20 interface compare to the Tivo. I am referring to Wishlists, Season Passes, etc. |

Lastly, as I am a big fan of the Tivo interface, how does the HR20 interface compare to the Tivo. I am referring to Wishlists, Season Passes, etc. I have an HR20 and an HR10. I much prefer the interface of the HR10, but the HR20 is a pretty good DVR. I needed a new antenna (larger dish with 5 LNB) when I got the HR20 as an addition to my HR10 (which used a 3 LNB dish). They also replaced the multiswitch, and added a pair of devices to the cables attached to the HR20. I asked just yesterday about when the new channels would show up in the newsgroup rec.video.satellite.dbs, and here's what Bob Nielson said: The information on the dbstalk and satelliteguys forums indicate that the official date is September 19 (to start--some will come later), but many expect them to show up earlier, possibly this weekend. The ones which have a SD equivalent will have the same channel numbers (like the locals do). They will be included in the same base package (assuming you have HD access). The ones without SD equivalents are in a new HD Extra Pack for $4.99 (current HD customers are supposedly grandfathered). Another post I read indicated that DirecTV is offering a "free" upgrade to the HR20 for existing HR10 customers. That only applies AFAIK to those customers who are not currently in a state of commitment due to an earlier equipment upgrade (that's the condition I'm in). Your question about the wishlists & season passes... I think season passes, although a bit different on the HR20, works OK. I have season passes for sat locals set up on my HR20, and for HD content on the "free" (after $10 HD payment) sat channels like TNT HD on the HR10. They seem about equivalent after setup. But I don't see anything like the HR10's wishlists. Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't find it if it's there. One last point... when I added the HR20 to my HR10, the dish and new multiswitch and installation were free, but I had to pay (I think about $200) for the HR20. My understanding that now it's free except for a 2 year commitment. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/ |

I don't know about free, I just relocated and managed to get the relocation package, an HR20 for $99, kept my HR10 and don't have a 2 year commitment. So far, the HR20 isn't bad, it's mostly a matter of getting used to the new interface. Word of warning though to anybody moving who currently gets local H via OTA, DTV now wants you to take the antenna with you if you want it at the new location, they didn't tell me that, till after the event, grrrr. -- Nik Simpson |
