recommendation for first (and last?) front projector

I'm a HT buff but have always cared much more about sound than image.
Thus, I'm still quite pleased with my 10 year old Samsung 20" CRT.
But, we bought a house with a perfect dedicated HT space and the
distance from where image would be to seating point necessitates a
larger image. The space will be in a basement and completely dark.

All I want is a reasonably decent image, reliability, and component
video inputs (this has more to do with one particular video source's
cable than quality considerations per se).

So, bring the recommendations on. I'd like to spend between $500 -
$1,000.
