Default Sony SLV-E730EX VCR

Power failure today, when it came back on, dead VCR.

I've checked that power is getting in past the plug fuse and the one inside
the case, and on power connection I can hear a faint buzzing from the unit,
like one gets from a transformer. But no LED display light up, no response
to power switch, eject button, etc.

Any knowledgeable suggestions for an easy cure, or is it a professional
repair or a write-off?

I think I can confidently say it's a power supply problem. Most likely
old capacitors that have lost their value.
Repair is possible but if you can't do it yourself or have a capable
friend, then it may be uneconomic to get a professional repair.

Mine did the same - seems that some Sony power supplies are short-lived. I
was going to buy a new VCR then realised I never watch TV anyway

Before you dump it try C153 47uf and C154 1uf in the power supply.

That was a seriously impressive piece of remote diagnosis!

Took it apart yesterday (ugh, all that desoldering for such a simple
repair), took the caps into Maplins this morning, to ensure I got the right
bits, soldered it all back together again, and ... nothing!

Then I put the PCB fuse back :-) and everything worked!

Well worth the nasty burn from dropping the soldering iron ...

Thanks so much to everyone, but most particularly to you, Ivan.
