Having found the impressive website for the Topfield,
I'm a little worried. I mean, it's all very impressive,
but I wanted a PVR, not a new hobby ...

It appears to be a very impressive,
and widely recommended machine.

But is it usable WITHOUT all
the customisation and tweaking?

The Topfield 5800 PVR works out of the box and the majority of users
probably run it in this mode. Download the re-written UK manual and see
for yourself what features it has.
http://www.toppy.org.uk/documents/5800pvr%20manual_Rev.4.pdf

If you want to add a few TAPs (third party programs) then it should take
you a no more than a few minutes to install them - fit and forget.

Some other boxes do have some of the little features that perhaps
Topfield should have included as standard but if you are willing to
spend a short time with some of the popular TAPs then you will end up
with a box that far outshines its rivals (I write as a Topfield owner).

It is quite usable, but it is not IMO preferable. I don't like the look
of the user interface and it doesn't auto-pad recordings.

However, installing the MyStuff TAP is very simple, assuming you have a
PC with USB port and internet connection (or can borrow one), and that
is enough to turn it into a much more powerful machine.

But still, if you don't like the idea of that then get a Humax. I saw
one at a friend's house at the weekend and they love it.

The only real difference between a Humax and a Topfield with MyStuff on
it, that I can see, is that MyStuff does season passes using its control
timer features. In other words it will search through the EPG and set
recordings for you, if you ask it to, which is a feature I would not
want to be without, now that I have it.

And also I prefer the look of the MyStuff user interface, to both the
out-of-the box Topfield one and the Humax one.

I call that a radical interpretation of the text.

Ours has been well and truly used every single day since we bought it more
than two months ago, and I have to say that we're delighted with it, hasn't
missed a beat.

Yes, but the tweaks do help.

Dixons are selling the 250GB version for £219 + £5 delivery if you enter a
promotion code of TOP30

The short answer is yes. It will work out of the box just fine. If you
want to fiddle to your hearts content, then it will do that as well.

For most users there is a middle ground that probably entails sticking a
couple of handy extras on it and then forgetting about them.

In my case I went to the bother of adding three TAPs to it that added a
big bunch of new (and worthwhile to me) facilities, but have not changed
it since.
