Default Phone line necessary for old non-sub S1s?

Okay, I took advantage of the recent upgrade offer of a new Dual DVR
for old-timers with S1 machines, and absolutely love the ability to
record two channels at once (along with keeping two buffers going at
once!). This will be a big help for those conflicts in prime time
this fall.

Anyway, I hooked up my old S1 to a secondary TV, and hope that I'll be
able to use this essentially as a hard-drive VCR-like machine for odds
and ends. I understand that I won't have access to program guides,
Season Passes, Wish Lists, etc.

Right now, I'm still in the middle of a weeklong grace period where
the S1 is still making calls and updating the guides, waiting for me
to renew on this machine (which I'm not). But after this week is up,
will I still need to keep a phone line hooked up? Will it still make
daily calls? If so, why?

thanks...

You can keep the line hooked up and it'll make daily calls. It will keep
the clock set. What I did with mine was disconnect the phone line til the
clock got off so much it started affecting recordings and then I'd plug it
in and force a call to get the clock set and then disconnect it for a
couple of more months. That way it didn't and use the line every day.
After your guide data runs out, you'll have to use manual recordings and
manual season passes, etc.

What a lot of unnecessary effort, just leave the phone line plugged in and when the
sub runs out the daily call becomes a 1 in 6 days call. That keeps the clock
running corectly.
Now if tivo wan't to stop supporting series 1 machines then they will need to
update the software to allow manual time corrections, first.

You might want to have it make the calls to keep the clock accurate.
It's probably not necessary daily, but every week or three and after
a power failure you might want to call in. It sets the clock *before*
checking your account status. It's the only way to set the clock
unless you hack it. You can force a call when you want it to make one
and you've plugged in the phone line again.

It might keep calling because it's assumed that you will (re-)subscribe
or sell it to someone who will and you want guide data quickly after
your account is turned on. If you don't like this, unplug the phone
line.

Without a subscription, you can do time-and-channel recording. You might
encounter a nag screen when the guide data runs out when you do something
that wants guide data (like the banner indicating what show is currently
playing), but it isn't really that annoying.
