"cgott" wrote in message ups.com... Is this an independant brand or made by another company? Are they quality TV's? Syntax (Olevia) is a new start company located in California. I bought a HDTV from them because it is cheap, but found out the quality is better than any Sony XBR I owned. |

They have been helpful in providing manuals and reasonably priced on things like remotes and lamps, but they seem to be limited in field support for actual repairs. For instance, on the LCOS sets they require them to be sent back to CA if the light engine needs to be changed. The sets are highly integrated so that there are few boards and there is no support for component level repair. In general, the sets that I have seen have looked pretty good. Leonard |

"cgott" wrote in message ups.com... Is this an independant brand or made by another company? Are they quality TV's? Made by http://www.syntaxbrillian.com/ Just purchased a 2 series 232V 32 inch set and it is a really nice TV for the price. Paid just under 500 for it. When it was lined up in the store with other sets costing as much as 200 to 500 dollars more, I thought that the picture quality was equal to if not better. Time will tell for durability, but so far not disappointed. GregB |

Is this an independant brand or made by another company? Are they quality TV's? My first Olevia broke. From last year, a SD not a HD model. Started picking up fine horizontal pin stripes after warming up, and red aberrations at times bad enough to overwhelm blacks. Also a relatively hot set. Wasn't more than a few months from the warrantee expiration, so a good thing. Wasn't abused, but mostly runs from a computer. Between movies and musical programs I run, it was probably up on average 6 hours daily. Olevia picked up everything on prepaid advanced replacement (pay for replacement until the defective unit is received in CA, whereupon charges are reversed). Model replacement appears to be a better 432. HD was a pleasant surprise and eye opener, and the unit runs much cooler. Didn't pay a dime and turn around was for the most part acceptable once we got our signals straight. (Tech semi-jerked me around by getting me to first replace out a motherboard. To no avail, as fortune had it. I'd rather just have done the advanced replacement swap on the complete unit had I known first off. If the MB swap had worked, I'd be sitting here a SD, not a HD tuner, a hot set, and feeling more numb and dumb. Come to think of it, what the hell is Olevia doing sending endusers MB assembly units on waranteed units, anyway. . .). I have no way of saying I'm way out on the scale for defect ratios, (from Olevia's standpoint or defects generally across the industry), that an insignificant few experience problems. Olevia aggressively markets refurbished 90-day units (30 labor 90 days parts), which is likely the unit I now have (as-new and factory recertified). Doesn't matter - I'm over 12 months at this stage, besides, it can tend to work out as a one-shot fix if under a year (some, I've read, say they were refused second-contact warranty commitments). Buying Olevia again, I'd conditionally consider an open box item, but doubt I'd buy on Olevia's 90-days merit. FWIW - Glad it was new and things are working out well enough so far. |

Here's their direct website: http://www.olevia.com/ And I hate websites that insist I have Flash running in order to browse their site. I usually have Flash turned off as doing so stops distracting animated ads and pop-ups not blocked by a regular pop-up blocker. Anyway...... I read about 40 reviews on their products at Amazon and Newegg. That was enough to scare me away from this brand. Big deal killers included: 1. Any source other than true HD not connected via the HDMI input looked like "mudd." A few people wrote it's a problem with the ATI Xillion processor, no firmware fix available. 2. Tinny speakers. 3. Cumbersome and bad remote. 4. Poor reliability. |

Big deal killers included: Funny, I'm looking at all the Olevia sets at newegg right now, a total of 13. Of those, 7 have the top rating, 5 with the next to best, and one with a 3 of 5 rating. To me, that totally disagrees with what you write. And I see similar review stats at Amazon. Being an owner of a 427V (silver model of 527V) Olevia set I use behind a mythtv box, I'll address these statements from experience. 1. Any source other than true HD not connected via the HDMI input looked like "mudd." A few people wrote it's a problem with the ATI Xillion processor, no firmware fix available. I use the VGA port and HD, SD over HD, and real SD look great on the set. I don't use any of the internal tuners, but I did test everything when I got it. Using an antenna all ATSC and NTSC provided pictures as good as they could be. That means all digital stations were crystal clear, and all NTSC were better than I get on a regular NTSC set on the same antenna. 2. Tinny speakers. Sounds fine to me as they were. Of course bass and treble can be adjusted to ones liking. If you meant small, then I can't see the actual speakers inside the sides, but the grill size is larger than most sets I've seen. I do think they are limted to 2W each though, which seems weak, but I've never had it more than 60% volume and that's pretty loud. 3. Cumbersome and bad remote. I found nothing cumbersome about the set or the remote, and the remote certainly worked fine. The only problem with the remote was that my universal remote didn't have a code for the TV. But that wasn't really a problem since I have a $17 learning remote that learned all the codes just fine. I never use original remotes and pack them away so I will always be able to program another universal remote when I wear it out. 4. Poor reliability. I haven't had a problem, and I expect many of thousands of others haven't either. I've had it about 6 months and it gets a minimum of 6 hours use a day. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |
