"bugbear" wrote in message ... tim..... wrote: "Robin" [email protected] ndstuff.co.ru wrote in message news ![]() He did say "best", not easiest. Bearing in mind also "Ideally I'd like to be able to record to DVD too" I'd have to say that neither the Topfield (which I have used) and the Humax (which I own) is "best" since they don't do DVDs. So you (OP) might want to consider a PC-based solution. Personally I think that the OP should reconsider his requirement for a box that has both a disk and DVD recorder. Such boxes are not easy to find. I assume I'm missing something (at this early stage of my research that's quite possible) But this (2006) review found a few: http://www.avreview.co.uk/news/article/mps/UAN/827/v/3/ Um, so it does. But take a look in an Argos catelogue or walk around your local (chain) electrical shop and see how many you see. tim |

From the start, the firmware has been prone to lock-up. Humax are good at "patching" the firmware to resolve a particular problem but soon, another problem appears and the Humax starts to lock-up again. By "problem", I am referring to something in the stream (MHEG or whatever) that causes the box to lock. Badly written firmware I'm afraid :-( A |

It's rare to find anyone using it straight out of the box yes? It works just fine OOTB (which is a lot more than I can say for the Humax), it just becomes something very special with a bit of investment of time. You evidently have an axe to grind with your views on the Humax so it's pointless carrying this on really. |

I was able to advise him because my Topfield shares this flakiness. André Coutanche |

Pardon me for having an informed hands on experience of the two units and wanting to share it. I am sorry it doesn't fit in with your blinkered view. I've owned a Humax since January this year. It gets a fair bit of use everyday and has yet to cause a single problem. It hasn't hung, forgotten to record a programme or lost any programmes. I've updated the software once and in all honesty don't have a bad word to say about it and I'm pretty damn picky when it comes to deciding something 'works as advertised'. -- Andrew, contact via http://interpleb.googlepages.com Help make Usenet a better place: English is read downwards, please don't top post.
