I use Mozilla Thunderbird which is fairly similar to OE in a clean
uncluttered layout - you should be able to cross over to it without much
pain. Other newsreaders I've used before had a lot of stuff left on
screen from the old days of reading off-line and highlighting threads to
download. They look a bit too busy to me....

Mozilla has its faults as well - it's also possible to do the same thing
as OE and mis-send personal mail to the newsgroup as it is a mixed
email/news app.

What you can do with OE (and thunderbird) is use different identities
(OE: File - Switch Identity, Thunderbird: profile manager). Use one for
personal & another for newsgroups. That might work for you...

For Usenet, Agent, although it isn't free. 40tude and Thunderbird are
okay for free alternatives.

For Email, if you have broadband, I very much like Googles Gmail
service. For a more conventional client, Courier, which I believe is
now free from Rosecity software.

Only with OE. ;-)

I wouldn't risk it with any program :-)

Point taken!

Having said that, I am one of the few people on the planet who actually
*likes* OE.

That will stir up a hornet's nest.

Many people seem to regard their choice of newsreader as something to be
expounded with near religious fervour. All other newsreaders are bad, but
at least they all agree that OE is worse.

It's like Monty Python, with tiny bands of the Judean's peoples front, the
Peoples front of Judea etc etc all hating each other, then one thing they
can agree on is that they all hate the Romans.

On mine it's near impossible to send an email to a newsgroup. You can
easily send an email reply to a news article but it will ask you to
confirm you really want to do this.
