Hello all. I hope someone can help me. I can't get my XBR3 to
display Closed Captioning properly. On DVD, it will display some CC, but the letters are huge and only a couple of words show from a sentence. From my cable box (HDMI connection, I'm not getting any closed captioning, even if I hit mute. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, or what I need to do to make it work properly??? Thanks for your help. Regards, Rich |

You need to configure the cable box to provide the closed captioning.
The DVD is configuring the closed captioning, and you need to reconfigure it to your preferences. TV sets will configure closed captioning only on the RF and composite inputs. The closed captioning must be configured on the source (STB or DVD) when using Component or HDMI inputs. riffin-rich wrote: Hello all. I hope someone can help me. Okay ... I believe I have correctly configured the cable box to
provide the closed captioning. So in the cable box, I've reviewed my settings. CC: Background is Solid, color is Black CC: Characters is Solid, color is White CC: Options (letter size) is dest to Default (set by program) CC: Source is set to "Std CC1" and Digital source is set to "Digital 1" I don't know what this means (Std CC1 and Digital 1-6 options) I'm watching FOXNews and don't see captioning. Muting doesn't display captioning either. Furthermore, as programming ended for a commercial, the transition just said, "Captioning is brought to you by ... [commercial]." I have set the TV to the folowing digital caption type: Basic: CC1 Digital CC: Basic Regarding my DVD, I am using composite video (to clarify I'm using correct terminology, that's the single yellow video cable) along with analog audio (into TV Input 4). When I play a DVD with this setup and turn on subtitles, I'm getting partial captions ... usually just the first half of the sentence and nothing else. Frequently, nothing comes up at all. Your last sentence doesn't seem to be holding true in my case: despite my using the composite inut, changing captioning options on the TV has no effect on the captioning...? Any suggestions on more advanced TV settings? CC1/CC2/CC3/CC4/Text1/ Text2/Text3/Text4, or other advanced settings? Someone, please save me before I throw a brick through my new TV! ;-) Thanks so much for your time... Well, you also have many, many CC options in the remote control of the XBR3
that you can play with. I have the same model TV, and when I first set it up, I also, did not like the DVD caption size. I don't know if that will solve your CC problem, but it is certainly worth a try, if you did not already try it. Robert A. Cunningham "riffin-rich" wrote in message s.com... Okay ... Rob, have you found a quick way to cycle through the caption options?
I'm using Tools, Caption Vision (CC), and it's a bit tedious. Also, if I'm watching a program and change captions on the fly, should the caption formats change as I select different optios or do I need to power off/power on the tv? If anyone has any advice for me, I'd surely appreciate it! I can't get captions to work with the cable box at all, and I get big & intermittent text with my DVD player... Thanks so much again... Lets concentrate on the cable box. If you are watching the cable box
through the HDMI input, the CC setting, including CC ON and CC OFF, have absolutely nothing to do with whether you see CC or not. The CC circuitry in the TV is just not in play when you are watching through the HDMI input. You must turn CC ON and CC OFF at the cable box. How you do this depends on the brand of cable box and the software being run on the box. Check the manual for the box and/or software to see how to turn CC on and off, or let us know which box and software you have. WRT to the DVD player using the composite input. You should really be using a component or HDMI input to take full advantage of the 16:9 TV screen. Then you have set the DVD player set to run with a 16:9 TV. Which brand of DVD player do you have. riffin-rich wrote: Okay ... I believe I have correctly configured the cable box to provide the closed captioning. No, I also use tools, although rather than scrolling down, I scroll up (it's
a few keystrokes less). I really don't think you have to turn off the TV at all. It should change on the fly. I can't give you any advice on cable, 'cause I have Dish Network. You know, there are two sets of captions: 1. with the DVD itself, and 2. with the TV. Have you tried switching between the two, to see if you notice a difference. You've probably already down that, and if so, I apologize. Good luck "riffin-rich" wrote in message ups.com... Rob, have you found a quick way to cycle through the caption options? Have you verified in your DVD player's and STB setup menus that the
screen type is set to widescreen? Okay ... I got the cable box to properly display captioning. It was a separate menu item, to enable captioning, as I set the four options in a separate menu. Now I can see that the tv is working properly. What isn't clear at this point is how to change my font size coming out of the DVD (it doesn't appear that changing the font options on the TV has any impact on what's coming out of the DVD). I finally understand wbertram's replies ... ;-) Thanks to all. I'll play around and let you know what I come up with... Thanks again for all of your time! Sincerely, Rich |
