I have a EDTV (not HDTV), no cable or satellite, just local broadcast.
Reception is snowy and poor. Do you know if I can improve a EDTV's local broadcast reception with an indoor antenna? TIA |

You could get an ATSC receiver (if your TV doesn't have a built in digital tuner) and switch to OTA digital broadcast. You won't get snow anyway. You still might need a better antenna though. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

What antenna do you have on it now? How far are you from the transmitter sites? What tuners does the set have? ATSC and NTSC or just NTSC? What model set is it? What sort of connection do you have to the antenna? Alan |

If your current antennea system produces a snowy picture it indicates either
the antennea system is inferior, needs major repairs and updates, or you live a fair distance (exceeding 100 KM) from the local broadcasters. If you live within 45 KM of the broadcasters then a good quality outdoor antenna will normally suffice. Between 45 and 100 KM a good quality antennea system including preamplification may be required. Resorting to indoor antennas may be your worse choice, you are subjecting the already presumable weak signal to the addition of electrical noises generated within your residence. Your post limits us to the information you provided. Please repost with the following information including what Alan requested. TIA Include also what type of residence you reside in, aka. apartment, single home, condo, etc. Are the local broadcasters generally one direction from your residence or are you located where broadcasters may be different compass headings ( s, e, , etc) with respect to your residence. The ATSC tuner idea will work if you are close enough to the broadcaster to obtain a strong enough signal level to allow the tuner to lock onto the digital broadcast. "Alan" wrote in message ... TIA I have had a Plasma EDTV for nearly 3 years now. Like you, I only receive OTA TV. I'm 35 Miles from the transmitters in Chicago and use an antenna with a pre-amplifier in my attic. HD programming looks stunning. Digital SD programming looks very good. Since I only watch the digital versions of the stations, I no longer ever see snowy pictures, reflections, or washed out color. Even stations that are barely watchable in their analog form are wonderful in digital. I am sure that switching to an ATSC tuner (versus the NTSC tuner you now use) will make an *enormous* difference in picture quality. As others may have all ready suggested: 1. Use an ATSC (digital) tuner. If you don't have one built into your TV, you can add a standalone unit or use a DVD Recorder or DVR with an ATSC tuner. Or a computer with an ATSC tuner card. 2. Get a reasonable antenna solution based on your situation. If you are close, rabbit ears will work. Intermediate distances require an outdoor antenna, or an attic antenna with a pre-amp. Long distances will require an outdoor antenna and a pre-amp. 3. Point the antenna towards your transmitters. Most ATSC tuner devices have a signal meter that can be used to help fine tune your aim. 4. Enjoy. } ![]() Dan Woj... |
