Default OT - Dragons' Den Standby Saver

Does anybody know how the Standby Saver worked that was featured on Dragons'
Den?

The website for it and what it claims to do is he

http://www.standby-saver.co.uk/stand...r_products.htm

"The standby saver responds to the "standby" and "on" buttons of the TVs or
Audio systems original remote control and switches the power to the
equipment on and off as needed. While the TV and other equipment is in the
standby mode the power used by the equipment including the standby saver is
zero."

I've found some mention elsewhere that they use a rechargeable battery to
power the receiver that detects the signal from the remote control, so
surely all they've actually achieved is to move the point at which power is
consumed by the remote control detector from the TV or whatever device onto
their Standby Saver plug socket, and their claim of zero power consumption
is false advertising because they're claiming to have invented a perpetual
motion machine.

Don't mention Dragon's Den to me. The *******s wouldn't even consider my
idea of ejector seats for helicopter pilots.

Well their claim can be "technically" correct - in that after you have
turned it off, there is no power consumption at all from the mains until
you turn it back on. In energy terms there is slight of hand going on,
in that the battery must be charged when the system is "on". However the
big advantage is it makes it easy enough to turn of a bunch of related
bits of equipment with a single remote button push, that folks might
actually do it. (as to how much real value that really offers is a
different question!)

What did you expect? The EU target of a 1-watt standby mode
is not achievable with current technology.

Standby Saver might be useful if you use it to control an
entire AV rack (except Video/PVR).

Nick.

Report it to ASA if you're SO bothered. Just use the on/off switch instead.
Far easier and when the switch is OFF it uses no power. Standby is a waste
of time on any equipment.

Holy carp - I was building electronic switches like these for PCs in the
mid-late 1980s to turn off the monitor when it sensed that the base unit
was powered down - this was before monitors could sense this for
themselves and when PC manufacturers stopped putting a secondary socket
on the PSUs for the monitor.

Yeah, who wants their PVR to actually record things.

Yeah, that's why nobody ever puts any device into standby, moron.

£24.99's worth, apparently. ;-)
