Heard on BBC East news this morning that the Tacolneston mast is to be
replaced by a new one 50 metres taller ready for DSO. I was wondering why this is necessary as Tac already has DTT, so why the extra height? Marky P. |

Signals might get into places the present cannot reach or there is the possibility that to carry all the MUXs at full power they need two separate transmit aerials. The second one would probably need to be higher than the present one. Remember its an old mast, being opened in 1956. A new mast would be prudent in any case. -- From KT24 - in "Leafy Surrey" Using a RISC OS computer running v5.11 |

To reach the parts of East Anglia the present mast can't (and to annoy the Dutch perhaps :-) ) It's not just Taccy getting a new higher mast. Also happening at Black Hill, Wenvoe, and Caldbeck. Arqiva have a special page about Calbeck. http://www.arqiva.com/products-and-s...ial-solutions/ digital-switch-over/caldbeck-mast-build For the other sites, mb21 is your friend. |

Will the same be true of Winter Hill, as that's donkies years old is'nt it? Regards, Rob. |

Story about it on this page. http://new.edp24.co.uk/content/news/ It's amazing with East Anglia being so flat, that it would need a taller mast. The current DTT aerials must be quite low down the mast at the mo. Marky P. |

It's amazing with East Anglia being so flat, that it would need a
taller mast. The current DTT aerials must be quite low down the mast at the mo. Marky P. There were some comments about the Tacolneston mast in http://www.wrightsaerials.tv/Resourc...hannel%205.pdf including "Now, it's the opinion of many East Anglian aerial men that Tacolneston is underpowered as it is-and this is true, hence the ring of 13 relay transmitters around the edges of this relatively small, flat, region. Matters are made worse because the Tacolneston transmitting aerials are only 221 metres above sea level-much lower than virtually every other main transmitter in the country, even allowing for the fact that this is not a hilly area." Quite an old article but I don't think the mast has changed since then (although powers have). And even a very little hill matters if you are close to it (as I discovered when I tried to see the mast from a roof last weekend). -- Robin |
