Default tunerless dvd recorders

Greetings;
I need to help understanding the tunerless dvd players... I just
bought a Toshiba D-VR600 tunerless dvd recorder / vcr w/
upconversion. My next purchase will be a HDTV.

I use a cable box as a tuner, pass through the audio and video from
the box to the DVD/VCR and then to the TV. What I find that sux is
that the unit has to be powered on all the time to pass through a
signal to the tv.
If I go HD and connect a HDMI connection to the same dvd/vcr it too
will ALWAYS have to be on to pass a signal through even though I dont
intend on using the device. Is it considered normal for devices not
to pass through a signal when the units are in standby (powered off)
mode???

HELP!
Tom

Hmmm... Never heard of a VCR without a tuner in it until now. My only
question is why would you buy such a thing?

Then add another connection direct from the cable box to the TV using
another TV input. problem solved.

That's generally true. No power, no worky. :-) Oh, and BTW, I doubt the
DVR will pass HD. Sure won't record it unless it's downconverted out of
the cable box to 480i. The more I think about the D-VR600 the worthless it
sounds.

Um, no.
There are plenty of affordable devices (VCR's, DVD recorders, etc.)
with Digital (and analog) tuners in them in the stores. Philips makes
quite a few for less than $200, one with a hard drive for $300. I no
longer recommend my Philips device, its really starting to become
annoying. Plus, the wife doesn't use it, because its too much of a
pain to get set up (i.e. Turning it on, and start watching PBS for my
daughter takes too long). Personally, I don't even own a VCR (or VHS
tapes), so a combo unit with a VCR doesn't appeal to me, but there are
plenty in the stores now that have digital tuners in them for less
than $200. The only ones I've seen that never have a tuner are DVD
Players, not recorders, then it makes sense to not include the tuner.
Obviously, you still have to bring money, just not that much.

What country do you live in? Here in the US all the DVD recorders I've
seen have tuner's in them. And all the newer ones have ATSC/NTSC tuners in
them. After looking at DVD/VCR combos it's true that some don't have
tuner's in them, but many do have tuners in them. Walmart carries 5
different ones with ATSC tuners in them.

Probably not much more than the D-VR600 cost. Maybe less.

The only other ones with tuners were in the 300 plus range. The 200
and
below that had the hdmi input as well as recordable dvd dont have
tuners.
Its probably just as well because I doubt the digital tuners would
even
work with my cable system (cablevision, NY)

Still annoys me that you have to fire up X amount of devices just to
use
the TV.

I don't know where you shop, but Walmart has more than one DVD/VCR combo
under $200.

Of course the tuners won't work with your cable box. They are for OTA ATSC
reception.

There are models that will pass througfh the signals without turning them
on. But that really doesn't matter if you'd just run one connection from
your cable box direct to the TV, and another from the cable box to the
recorder and then to a seperate input on the TV.

Yes, and yes. My DVD recorder has coaxial pass-thru (not composite or
S-video though), and it has an ATSC and QAM digital tuner along with
an analog tuner. So, I (or my wife) can watch TV from the antenna on
the TV without turning on the DVD recorder and I only have one cable
coming out of the wall. Oh, it also has HDMI on it.
Also, the box was only $170, four months ago.

In case you haven't been keeping track, I have a Philips 3505/37 DVD
recorder.
Here's a link to Walmart for it: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=5663208
