Where can I get a cheap low-power amplifier?

http://www.markvelectronics.com/store
There are very few available. One source is to buy a cheap boom
box and only use the amplifier. Another source is Radio Shack.
A third alternative is to buy a car stereo booster and get a
12V power supply for it. Finally, you can build an amp pretty
easily if you are handy, but it probably won't be that cheap.
Mark V Electronics, for example, sells 20 watt amp kits for
under $30 and 80 watt amp kits for under $150. Sound Values
has a 60 watt amp kit complete for about $200, and Old Colony
sells some amp kits for a bit more. All three, Mark V, Old
Colony, and Sound Values kits have been built by satisfied
rec.audio.* posters, although quality of the Mark V kit is
lower than the others. (See 11.15, 11.16, 11.17)

Ok, that's an odd spam.

Advertizing the website of a store that's gone out of business??

Course, what's really weird is the site was only registered within the
last couple weeks.

Bizarre.

LOL, indeed. The best source for cheap amps is Costco. I got an entire
excellent 6.1 surround receiver there a few years ago for $150.

An "entire excellent" receiver for $150? Right.

Chip,

Yes, it's a Pioneer with 100 watts per channel, Dolby and DTS decoding,
switching for Component Video (and others), multiple digital inputs, etc.
The only "feature" I've found lacking is I wish there were more subwoofer
crossover frequencies to choose from. But you sound skeptical. Have you ever
heard it? The technical specs are excellent. In what way do you believe this
receiver is not excellent, and why do you believe that?

Simple. At $150, there has to be something missing.
For instance, you claim 100 wpc. Is that at a single
frequency or across a spectrum? What model number is it?

It's 100 Chinese watts measured according to the *PPWLS specification.

Got a problem with that?

*PPWLS = Peak Power When Lightning Strikes.

Yes in reality that receiver would probably be straining to produce 20 clean
watts, but on the other hand if it does the job he needs then it's fine.
Besides if they put the real power rating on there, nobody would buy
it...even at $150.

Agreed. It was a tongue-in-cheek reply in response to Chip, not
necessarily the OP.

There's nothing wrong [IMHO] with alerting a newbie to the fact that
what he's about to purchase is a piece of crap. In a perfect world, it
would be done maturely and diplomatically.

Seriously, what the hell fun is that?

I'll continue to walk the fine line between the two.
Sometimes I'll fall to one side or the other.

The average person doesn't know what they're missing because they've
never heard high quality audio.
They buy RCA, AIWA or Panasonic at RadioShack.

A smaller segment knows a little better.
These are the people the box stores rely on.
Pioneer, Bose, Yamaha, etc. are designed for them.

But just coz none of them know any better doesn't mean we [tinw] can't
let them know from time to time that they're stoopid. ;-)
