Is it me, but is Jaws on ITV1 running at a fast frame rate?
I know that broadcasters do run films at 25fps you would have thought they could run them in their native frame rate, but this is more like 27fps! |

It looks relatively normal, in that respect, but it's still cropped to 16:9 so is a waste of time. Plus, I know Saturday night TV is a ratings vacuum (which explains the constant situation with BBC2, tonight beginning a new series of "I Love British Film"), but in recent years Jaws has either been late-night filler or weekend afternoon (censored) filler. Now it's primetime entertainment. isnt the full uncut version only rated PG to begin with? -- Gareth. That fly... is your magic wand. http://www.last.fm/user/dsbmusic/ |

That said, Jaws does kick ass in the film department so it'll probably give them good ratings. -- Looks like the first hour was speeded up, it appears to have returned to normal. The official run time is 124 mins (or 130mins for the US TV version), with the 135 mins ITV have allowed including commercials, baring any cuts , are trying to get it to fit. I worked in a cinema in the mid 70s after it being on for 15 weeks or so, I know every second along with the reel change points! |

Now it's primetime entertainment. isnt the full uncut version only rated PG to begin with? Yep, but bits of people being eaten (pun not intended) and the occasional "****" will get taken out. Last Sunday, when BBC2 shoved Titanic into a 6pm slot so as to kill time before Rome started, I saw bits of it and noticed it was edited so Bill Paxton's crew member had re-recorded his line to say "You're so full of it, boss" ('it' instead of '****') - which at least is better than someone else later re-recording it ("Yippee-kay-ay, kimosabe" anyone?), but later on as the iceberg hit there was uncensored "*******" and "horse****". It was one of those films where they got a 12-cert just for an f-word, since a PG in the US means box-office death when it's not a kids film and PG-13 seems to attract audiences for some reason. |

You know, I had exactly the same thought about The 39 Steps on BBC2 during the afternoon. There were scenes of the chase across the Scottish moors that looked significantly speeded up. Are you sure you hadn't changed channels to the best of Benny Hill that was on the other side? -- Col Steal a spaceship and head for the sun, Shoot the stars with a lemonade ray gun. |

I know that broadcasters do run films at 25fps you would have thought they could run them in their native frame rate, but this is more like 27fps! Okay, I'm going to show my complete ignorance here. How can you speed the film up without speeding the dialogue and the rest of the sound with it? you cant. that's why people with half decent ears moan about the music etc being screwed up when watching a PAL showing of a film - haven't you ever watched a film with a familiar song on it and wondered why it sounds different somehow? these days software can be used to fix the pitch - but the tempo will still be out - although less people notice this than the pitch - i even think actors voices sound weird when viewed in PAL if it's an actor i've seen a lot of. -- Gareth.
