Ok, Last night, I biwired my new Polk RTi70 speakers and there was a
definite improvement. I am using Radio Shack 14 ga. megacable for the lower frequency and Monster 16 ga. cable for the higher frequencies. I don't want to get into a discussion of whether the improvement is because the high/low frequencies are separated or because of the larger wire diameter, although I believe it to be the latter. Two months ago, I had a Pioneer Elite VSX-26TX receiver with a Polk RM6500 satellite speaker system. My system now is comprised of: Receiver - Pioneer Elite VXS-53TX Fronts - Polk RTi70 (biwired) Center - Polk CSi30 L/R Surrounds - Polk RM2300 (satellites from RM6500 system) Rear Surround - Polk RM2600 (center from RM6500 system) Sub - Polk 100 watt, 8" (sub from RM6500 system) From those WITH experience, what should my next upgrade and the subsequent ones be? What is the most logical? What will give me the most bang for the buck? |

David, The dual binding posts are for "bi-amping," bi-wiring is one of those great audio urban audio legends to sell more wire ggg. Real bi-amping involves separate active crossovers and multiple amps, not the type of situation you see with the average receiver owner. Here's the quote from Polk's description of the RTi70's; "Dual, bi-ampable gold-plated 5-way binding post inputs (with wide holes for large-gauge bare wire connections) for the most secure connections and the most versatile wiring applications." You are on the right track though with the wire gauge, 14AWG may be barely adequate for short runs, but I would just run 12AWG to all the speakers and be done with it. As for the upgrade, good progressive DVD players are cheap these days, and the Pioneer DV-563A will do both DVD-Audio and SACD also. These players are a steal at one-eighty MSRP. You've got some pretty good mains, so I would also look at a more serious subwoofer. That little Polk 8" box just can't get it up when the depth charges start thumping in "Das Boot." Take a look around, and you may well be surprised that 12" subs have come down quite a bit these days. Since true lower bass in omni-directional, you don't need to stick to Polk and can find some pretty good subs for pretty cheap. IIRC both Home Theater and Sound & Vision magazine have run sub shoot-outs relatively recently, the results may be on the sites. Good luck, all the best, Mike |
