Default Self amalgamating tape and Quad LBBs

The reception on my $ky minidish system is very marginal so I have got
a Lidl 80cm dish, available *today* to improve matters.

At the same time I want to add a quad LNB, (the lowest noise ones I
can buy 0.2DBs or better), for other $ky+ freesatfromsky and generic
boxes,

It looks as if Self amalgamating tape, which has served me well for
years, will be unusable on a quad LNBs because of size restrictions.

Satcure now recomend http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/boots.htm Neoprene
boots and silicone grease.

Do these work as well as self amalgamating tape

Dave Fawthrop.

Shouldn't that be freesatfrom$ky? What's wrong with just writing Sky?
Does it burn your eyes?

My quad LNB, a Philips, came with 4 rubber boots to use, so maybe when you
buy you will be supplied also. Also if not the supplier may well be able to
sell one some.
Guess you could belt and braces with your tape.

By the way good to see you can do a one NG post instead of multi posting NGs
and upsetting people.

I've always understood that self amalgamating tape disintegrates with UV
over the long term, so I add a layer of PVC to prevent that. Am I
worrying too much?

When I wrote in wotsat that self-amalg was the only way Satcure had a letter
in the next edition saying that he couldn't doquads and quattros with self
amalg. Well I can. It isn't easy although it gets easier with practice. I
won't do it any other way. Those boot things are ****e.

I've never known this happen.

I agree with Bill. There is nothing to beat self-amalgamating tape. It
needs to be stretched to at least twice its length as it is used so it
isnt easy with quads etc. Long nosed pliers can help if you have big
fingers.
I certainly have not seen it degrade if stretched tight and done well.
I wouldnt use any PVC as it will not seal tightly and it will allow
water between its layers.
A number of quad, quattro and octo LNB's have a decent pull-down cover
over the plugs now which helps a lot to keep the connections dry.

By the way, when I go out to problem solve on satellite systems, I
would guess that around 80-90% of them have loose F plugs at the LNB
or the back of the receiver or at the wall plate if there is one. Most
of these turn out to have been installed by Sky themselves. I am quite
sure that many unnecessary service calls are generated in this way and
probably many receivers and LNB's are changed, all at a price, of
course.......or am I just being synical?

What is compromising your reception in Halifax Dave?
Except for serious thunderclouds, I would expect a minidish
to perform well.

I did my own quad LNB with self-amalg tape. It was a bit fiddly but has
been working fine for quite a while now. My total previous experience of
LNB installation was replacing my single LNB when the original one broke
so I would say give it a go unless you are really fumble-fingered.

The boots I bought from Satcure would not fit properly on my Quad LNB as the
sockets were to close together.
