AUDIOPHILE AUDITION has a new extensive feature on the very serious
problem of lip-sync error caused by video processing on most HDTV displays, hi-res disc players and broadcast sources. Hasn't had much attention elsewhere. = http://www.audaud.com/article.php?ArticleID=3011 |

The information on this feature can be found on page 49 of the manual: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/DVPNS75H.pdf I am confused by Sony's disclaimers about how the audio delay will not work with Dolby Digital or DTS and how the audio delay will not work through HDMI, optical or coaxial output. Could it be that the audio delay is only effective on the analog stereo output? |

Unfortunately, different channels have different delays. |

My surround sound receiver has time delay adjustment to sync video and
audio if it's out of sync so I don't have to worry about it even if I get a Bluray or HD-DVD player that has the lip sync problem. Hasn't had much attention elsewhere. =http://www.audaud.com/article.php?ArticleID=3011- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - I think most receivers today have a lip-sync delay like John Henry mentions but most don't have enough delay - some as little as 80 ms and even those with 200 ms fall to 100 ms for 96 Khz audio - which usually isn't enough. And none that I've seen allow easy adjustment of the delay while watching. Most put the adjustment in an obscure set-up menu which isn't easy to get to and overlays the screen every time you make an adjustment. That would be fine if it were a one time set-and forget adjustment as it would be if the screen delay were the only problem. But that just doesn't work if you need to correct for the variable video delay for every program and every DVD and if you don't you will usually still have enough lip-sync error to cause the subliminal interference Stanford documented. They proved that even viewers who did not notice the lip-sync error suffered from the same feelings of disbelief and distrust. Quite the opposite of what I want in my home theater! Back in 2004 I bought one of the first Felston DD340 dedicated delays ( three generations ago since their DD740 is covered in that revoiew and there was a DD540 between them) and quickly found that it wasn't just my plasma delaying the video a fixed amount but the swings in video delay already in the signal ranged from zero to 50 or 60 ms during the course of a day from program to program on the same network. Even DVD's vary nearly that much. The main thing the Dd340 and the other dedicated delay boxes in that review do so well is allow adjusting the delay at the touch of a plus and minus button while watching the program without any disturbance so you can get it perfect. You just can't do that on any av receiver I've seen. I've never seen one with + and - buttons for audio delay on their remote and one I saw did not even let you see the video at all while changing the audio delay. |
