Default Directional finding system?

I hope someone can shed light on this strange mast that has appeared
near me. Unfortunately I do not have a photo but it has seems to have 5
dipoles in a pentagonal arrangement with an additional vertical pole. On
top of the mast seems to be a plastic dome.

Looking for planning permission for this I came across:

http://planningapplications.leeds.go...ERTY&module=P3

which basically says:

"18.1m high monopole with remote monitoring and directional finding
system with detached equipment cabin"

Applicant's Name is OFCOM and Agent's name is Marconi.

Also searching on Google I came across another planning application in
Gateshead.

http://online.gateshead.gov.uk/docus...-+Appendix.rtf

What the hell are these things?

Should I be worried about it being so close?

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks,

Graham

Here's what to do if you live close to the thing. Buy an old fashioned
electric bell. Put it in your loft. Connect as long a wire as you can manage
to one terminal of the spark gap. The wire should be as high up and
encompass as much loft space as you can manage. Connect the other terminal
to a water pipe. Power the bell via a simple bell push in the upstairs
toilet. Whenever you go to the toilet hold the bell push in for the duration
of your visit. It's best if your bowel habits are somewhat irregular.
Instruct the other members of the houshold to do the same. Tell tham it's to
control a fan. Keep this up for a year or two and eventally the monitoring
station will be dismantled and moved elsewhere.

Or just stick it on a random timer.

That reminds me of the Wilson Wall-flame oil fired boiler we had
at my parents house. Talk about a spark transmitter!
The family had to freeze when I was operating in the shack.

I wonder what would happen if an Amateur moved in
near to one of these UMSes?

Clearly you are an engineer and I am a poetic engineer. But at least you
agree with the principle.
