Has DirecTV said what channels it plans for this satellite?
http://www.finanznachrichten.de/nach...el-8562788.asp The Proton Breeze M rocket lifted off at 7:16 a.m. today local time (9:16 p.m. Friday EDT, 01:16 today GMT) from the Cosmodrome's Pad 39. The mission lasted 9 hours and 8 minutes, before the Breeze M upper stage placed the DIRECTV 10 satellite into a geosynchronous transfer orbit. After about two months of in-orbit testing, the satellite will move to its operating position of 102.8 degrees West longitude to enhance DIRECTV's high-definition services across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. "We're proud of the excellent performance of our Enhanced Proton Breeze M and its demonstrated ability to lift such a massive payload as the DIRECTV 10 satellite," said ILS President Frank McKenna. "At around 6 metric tons, this Boeing 702 model was the heaviest spacecraft launch for Proton." McKenna continued: "Not only are we proud of the vehicle's performance, we're also proud of our schedule performance. We met our commitment to launch the satellite in order to support DIRECTV's goal of delivering up to 100 national HDTV channels by the end of the year." |

I kind-of-doubt that the $9.99 price today will be the same as when this is released.... Also... if I am paying $50-ish for usa, tnt, sci-fi, etc on SD... and now I can watch them in HD... am I still going to be paying for the SD channels that I won't watch.... and then pay for the HD channels that I want to watch? -- D.A.M. - Mothers Against Dyslexia see http://www.jacksnodgrass.com for my contact info. jack - Grapevine/Richardson |

Consider that most of the program material is probably not shot in HD.. so it will look like it looks.. almost! |

These days, more programming is most likely mastered in HD than not (reality TV and talkshows aside). There are plenty of shows airing currently that could be aired in HD if the channel was in HD. |

Here is a press release: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global...setId=P4130030 that mentions a few stations.... DTV says 100 national HD channels... BUT they are counting a bunch of HD Sport channels... Football, hockey, baseball, etc channels that are not year round channels.... I won't hold them to 100 channels... but I want to see the major cable networks available.... AND I don't want to have to pay for USA-SD and USA-HD.... Don't know what my poor little SD Tivos are going to do.... ;( AND... I am almost 100% certain that all of the new HD channels will be done with MPEG4 and the older HD Tivo won't work with the MPEG4 signals... not sure what the Tivo Hardware options are for MPEG4 support. jack -- D.A.M. - Mothers Against Dyslexia see http://www.jacksnodgrass.com for my contact info. jack - Grapevine/Richardson |

The people at avsforum.com are keeping track of all the press releases and such. Look in the HDTV forums for the D* threads. Somebody's got a count that is very close to 100. The new list does have alot of major channels. Don't know what my poor little SD Tivos are going to do.... ;( The *exact* same as it does now with no change. ![]() Its not like you can suddenly play the new Game Lounge things with them. AND... I am almost 100% certain that all of the new HD channels will be done with MPEG4 and the older HD Tivo won't work with the MPEG4 signals... not sure what the Tivo Hardware options are for MPEG4 support. Yep, all MPEG4 fed. HBO's announced their wholeline up available as HD feeds to the providers, and HBO is doing it all as MPEG4 as well. Making the cable providers that provide Highdef right now as MPEG2 to transcode their feed on over. The TiVo HW options for MPEG4 support are a big fat zero. The HR10-250 will still operate the same as it does now, but you won't get anything new with it. Eventually I could see D* drop some of the older MPEG2 Highdef channels, but not immediately. |
