Hoping someone can help me out here... I have a Samsung HL-S5088W. Its specs say that it can receive 1080p via its HDMI inputs. I have a DVI-to-HDMI cable and a PC with a (Radeon X600) video card capable of outputting 1080p. My goal this week has been to play Myst IV (which actually, I think, only goes up to 1024x768 itself) to play in the living room on our Samsung 1080p TV. I've had some success with running 1080 via a VGA cable to the TV, but it doesn't quite fill up the TV screen, and I get the sense that maybe it could be a little more clear. But nothing was as fuzzy or problematic than when I hooked my PC up to the HDMI cable and set the PC's resolution to 1920x1080. Now the fonts came out totally fuzzy, and the icons jagged. I couldn't quite read the new options in my display control panel, but it looked like I was being given a choice between 30Hz and 60Hz. When I tried 60Hz, the TV said that it can't recognize that resolution. The other resolution, the one that seemed to read "30Hz" left the picture very fuzzy-looking. AND the 1080 ("i?") picture was too large for the DLP screen. For example, only about 25% of the Start button is visible, and almost none of the System Tray. So, I could use some help. Was I reading that 60Hz vs. 30Hz correctly? And does the 60Hz mean "Progressive" while the 30Hz means "Interlaced?" Can anyone give me a couple pointers (even to a FAQ) that will help me get a sweet, clear 1080p picture from my PC to fill my DLP screen? Thanks in advance. |

You do realize that you would never be able to see the difference between 1080p and 1080i, don't you? Not in a million years. |

The implication of your statement is that visually, 1080i looks just as good as 1080p. That would also imply that 720i looks as good as 720p. Too bad they didn't include 720i in ATSC, or maybe we could get twice as much 720 programming over a given channel. And why even bother with creating 480p if 480i is going to look just as good? -- |---------------------------------------/----------------------------------| | Phil Howard KA9WGN (ka9wgn.ham.org) / Do not send to the address below | | first name lower case at ipal.net / | |------------------------------------/-------------------------------------| |

That may be the case, but please do read about the other problems I'm having. With the only 1080 picture I can get through the HDMI cable, my picture is: - fuzzy/jagged, and - too large for the TV screen. It's exactly the opposite of what I expected from buying this new cable and running a 1080p signal directly to a 1080p "monitor." |

You do realize that you would never be able to see the difference between 1080p and 1080i, don't you? Not in a million years. Weird, I saw an immediate difference between the two when I replaced my original Xbox 360 which only did 1080i on my 1080p native TV with the Xbox 360 Elite outputting 1080p. Was it a huuuuge difference? Nope. But I definitely noticed a crisper picture with less noise with my Elite on my TV. But the biggest difference by far is when you get fast moving action on the screen. It's just less blurry. You see more of the action going acros the action. Not that 1080i was bad, but 1080p definitely crisper. This was the case for me for both when playing games and also watching HD DVD movies via the 360 addon player. May be my 60XBR2 Sony just doesn't do a good upconversion job with the 1080i signals to display it in its native 1080p mode. But personally, I did see a noticeable and improved difference with what was displayed on my TV from a 1080i and a 1080p source. |

I think I read a few threads about your issue at avsforum.com when I was doing my research into which TV to get. Go find the thread specific to your TV model and search in your TV section. I'm pretty sure there are a few in there about gettings PCs to display properly on your TV. If not, you can always ask in there anyway. You'll probably end up with better answers. |

Actually, I did swing by there. I went to the "Samsung 1080p Owner's Thread --- HLSxx87W/HLSxx88W DLP Models" (AKA, the "Samsung 2006 HLSxx87W/HLSxx88W (1080p) Series Owner's thread"), but I could not figure out what search terms would help me find what I needed out of the 18,618 posts in that thread. DVI? PC? 1080p? I did a little better searching Google Groups, but still have yet to bump into the guy who's posting the same problem that I have. One other "problem" is that the VGA picture is not bad at all! At 1080, it's somehow still smaller than the maximum size of the Samsung, and the icons are a little hard to read on the Desktop. But the (1024x768) game Myst IV plays well enough on the Samsung (via VGA) that I'm not sure how much effort I should put into figuring out the DVI-to-HDMI thing, other than out of a desire to "master" my gear. |
