I'd say it most unlikely that DAB reception will be good on a portable
radio if FM is always poor.

That depends on where the fm and dabble tx'es are located, they aren't
always at the same sites...

Of course. But FM is a mature network and DAB not. So I stand by my
statement. The OP would best make sure he can get a refund if the portable
radio doesn't work well - or borrow one to try first.

Indeed as the BBC doesn't seem to be expanding its Dabble net quite as
it might!...

I don't want an installation!! just a mains/portable sort of thing,

If your serious about quality then chuck the idea of DAB as far as you
can throw it and then five feet more!. UK DAB is ****e squared..
Get a satellite system as even the BBC, not now noted as the best
broadcaster on tech quality, transmits there on higher rates, apart from
Radio 3.
Or aim your dish over to ASTRA 19.2 or Hotbird and see what the rest of
Europe has to offer Stations like Bayern 4 Klassik at 320K MP2 wipe
the floor with DAB and theres quite a few other European broadcasters
who still have engineers where it matters:-))
That sounds nice and portable and will look super on the kitchen table...

Well connect it up to a ipod sender with a couple of stacks of Alan Dick
mixed panels then, usable anywhere round the gaff....

Still obsessed there Tony,

Oh yes:-)

Obsessed with good audio quality and very proud of that!, so If I'm a
loon .. then thats OK with me M8!...

is the other loon still around spouting the
same old crap is a.r.d?

A.r.d?..

Did you read the OP or just the subject line?

Well the OP does contradict himself a bit saying its got to be from Sat
but portable so..

As dabble leaves a lot to be desired even when the reception is good and
really only suitable for 2 " diameter speakers on Mono portables I
thought our O/P might like something a bit better;

What would you suggest then?....

The loon is more about you spouting on about how you can get classical
radio stations at 256 kb/s when the OP wants occasional radio 5 with a
mains portable setup.

You never read any of that, your usenet autoresponder saw DAB and typed
away pavlovian style.

I found the post a bit unclear, but when he said it would be freesat - I
read that as the radio through the telly option that he did not want as
his DTT was not usable.

Reading skills for you. DAB for him would be fine as an occasional
listener to radio 5.

Then why aren't you campaigning to have all AM broadcast transmissions

Working in the broadcast industry is no indication of good hearing or
judgement.

But I ask you again. You take every opportunity to say just how bad you
think DAB is - with no qualifications. I take it you thus think AM sounds
better?

I've worked in various topics, including audio, and I'm currently listening
to R3 via DAB. Using a pair of LS3/5A's as speakers.

It certainly doesn't sound to me as if I'm using a mono portable with a 2
inch loudspeaker. Nor does it when I use the main audio system with a pair
of ESL63's.

Slainte,

Jim
