I am in the market for 4 in-ceiling speakers, L, R and rears, and a
free-standing center channel speaker. I would like to spend no more
than $1000. Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks!

Cory

Cory,

I am in the market for 4 in-ceiling speakers, L, R and rears

I don't have any speaker suggestions, but I will tell you that the ceiling
is a terrible place for loudspeakers. All five speakers should be at ear
level.

There are a few out that are getting decent reviews, although the
soundstage still
appears to float above your head, even with aimable tweeters/mids and
they ain't cheap..
If memory serves from the last article out of Home Theater magazine (or
was it Widescreen
Review?) they ranged from around $400 each to around $1800 each, for the
ones in the article.

I would imagine cheap ones (without aimable tweeters.mids, or angled
recessed box) would be terrible
for any 5.1 cohesive soundfield.

Why stop there? Get rid of that ugly tv screen and replace it with something
hidden away somewhere.

JBL SP8 is not a bad choice on a budget however
as has been said before, mount at ear level when seated.
If you must put speakers in ceiling, they won't sound as great.

bull****. If the treble is coming from the ceiling, that is where the
sound stage will be heard.

Your ignorance is monumental. Consult a professional sound engineer to
solve your problem.

there are a lot of professional installations with the speakers on the
ceiling
this is usually because the customer or the wife/designer/ architect
insists on it.
not as much the installers idea.
now you have these ceiling speakers with tiltable tweeters which
provide a
tolerable compromise, but they cost a lot more ($800) a pair.
ceiling speakers mounted right above the seated listener are not THAT
bad.
it's all a compromise.
next time get a wife with THX certification or some STAX headphones.

I bet you still think it's impossible to get surround sound out of two
speakers.

correct. If you think you're getting surround sound out of two speakers
then you merely deluding yourself.
