You don't need to. Just make sure you get ALL of the URL above. As
usual, it has line-wrapped and clicking on it just sends you to the
forum home-page. You'll need to cut&paste it in 2 halves.

Thanks,

For some reason the photo didn't appear the first time I looked. Perhaps I
didn't wait long enough got it to download.

I presume the installers who mentioned an XG8 actually meant an XG8A for
London (CP).

It's not mine, I happened to find it earlier today.

That's why I put the URL inside angle brackets which ought to keep it
all together. Depends on the client software I suppose.

I see so many like this. It's a disgrace, and a total rip-off of course. Did
you get a receipt?

I'll not say anything here about specific firms, but believe me there's lots
I could tell you.

Not a standard feature of any newsreader I've come across but then it would
be a useful feature where possible. It wasn't the split line (which I
spotted and dealt with), rather the internet seemed to be a little slow
first time around and the text of the tread appeared fine but the picture
didn't. If I'd waited it would probably have strolled in later but I'm
impatient and missed it ;-).

Likewise I have seen some which are shocking. Rogue Traders featured some
awful bodgery & blatent ripping off of customers by Aerial Systems recently
which are one of the other large firms.

Reading that cableforum thread above though there is a lot of misinformation
about loft installations. Agreed outside is always better but there are many
situations where a properly aligned & installed loft aerial is perfectly
fine.

The thread also mentions that Action Aerials installed a masthead amplifier,
but when you read between the lines it appears it's a 4 way amplifier
powered via one of the downleads, presumably due to there being no power
supply in the loft.

I don't see a problem with charging £200 for a properly installed loft
aerial (not a high gain) and a 4 way amplfier with PSU. Partly because to do
it PROPERLY involves walking / crouching cat like around the entire loft
with aerial & analyser in tow trying to find the perfect spot whilst not
crashing through the ceiling below. This normally takes a lot more time than
putting the thing outside, and it's not sauna like up on the roof either.

Anyway, I don't know the setup with Action Aerials but assuming the
installer paid £30 for the aerial and £25 for the 4 way masthead with PSU.
That's £55. What cut do Skyforce take? Probably around half so the guy ends
up with £45 for all his bodgery. You can see why he'd want to get the job
over with quickly by sticking it in the loft regardless of signal.

The ironic thing is, I bet the customer chose to use Action Aerials based on
an incredibly cheap price given over the phone initially, probably something
like £65 all in. The old foot in the door technique as used by most aerial
companies. Really get's my goat up because for those of us who don't give
misleading prices over the phone, there is a lot of work lost to these large
firms but the customer is going to get a really poor job & end up being
charged the same ( and usually a lot more) anyway. Argh...
