Why are the BBC transmitting pictures with an black bar at the top

This seems an insanely stupid thing to do.
If I wanted an ugly balck bar on my TV I could put one on
with a piece of black sticky tape, but obviously only someone who
was completely insane, a spoon short of a dinnerset, would do that?
So why do the BBC and some ITV do this?

probably so that you can see the sides of the picture as shot.

Would it not make more sense to shoot the frigging picture so that
it was big enough not to leave a GREAT BIG FU*KING UGLY
BAR AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM. Not that I want to point
out the F*CKING OBVIOUS though.

They do. They shoot most material now in 16:9, which neatly fills a
16:9 screen without leaving any black bars anywhere.

I'm sure you must realise that with both 4:3 and 16:9 screens in
widespread use, it isn't possible to fill both types of screen
perfectly with the same material, so rather than make every programme
twice they have to decide when they shoot the material which type of
screen it is intended for, and accept that anything else will have to
be a compromise. It's a consequence of simple geometry.

No that's a load of rubbish, it does not explain it at all.
Do you understand the question?

I don't understand your problem.

Frankly, nor do I care.

Oviously a 5 year old would figure that.

Only a complete idiot consider doing that, obviously.
Ther is a persectly obvious and sensible solution

they have to decide when they shoot the material which type of
screen it is intended for, and accept that anything else will have to
be a compromise.

Yes they decided on a completely idiotic solution hence why they
should be all sacked.

It's a consequence of simple geometry.

It's a matter of comonsense and havnig overpaid usseless morons

Because they have more sense than one of the old film channels which shows
wide-screen films in wide-screen but reduced in size so that there is a
great big black border around the whole thing.

Isn't that to give the authentic look of being viewed on a Pye V4. And if
they put even more delay in the bit stream then it would also simate the
warm up time....

Err... is "Deal or No Deal" a film? Or Am I missing something?
Was not aware Eastenders was a film either.

Eastenders ? Deal or No Deal ? Have you been watching Three Days of the
Condor too often and reading something where there is nothing ? What is
Eastenders and Deal or No Deal, BTW ? Is that like 'car crash' tv ?
