Electric buses and cars are the answer, but they seem no nearer to becoming popular than they did 10 years ago! The councils who allow the running of diesel pumping buses should hang their heads in shame. I don't know where you live, but I haven't seen a diesel bus pumping out smoke for ages in London, Birmingham, Southampton or many other cities. With particulate traps, low sulphur diesel and even bio-diesel they are cleaner than ever. |

Discuss and it is reported to be only 40% efficient :-( If it radiates, at 10MHz, sufficient power to light a 60W bulb with 40% efficiency, doesn't that make it a 150W shortwave transmittier? Would it even be legal for somebody who had passed the RSGB exam to switch it on? Rod. |

Discuss I like the quote "There is nothing in this that would have prevented them inventing this 10 or even 20 years ago," commented Professor Sir John Pendry of Imperial College London who has seen the experiments. It was done more like thirty or forty years ago. Still, perhaps they have a way of powering my 3kW heater without frying the cat when she walks through the power-beam; hyper-space or sub-ether perhaps. Oh I see; it's a transformer with a large gap between the primary and secondary and no core. They were making transformers over a century ago! Where is the innovation? "The bulb was even made to glow when obstructions such as wood, metal and electronic devices were placed between the two coils", just like a transformer. "In the experiment both coils were made to resonate at 10Mhz, allowing them to couple and for "tails" of energy to flow between them", just like RF/IF transformers in radio receivers. I know normal air cored transformers have a small gap, but they are also it lot more than 40% efficient. Besides, my neighbour can not plug in to MY sockets, unlike this re-hash of a non-starter. This rubbish was the 3rd or 4th story on Friday night's main BBC 1 10pm News. Of all the worthy and tangible science or engineering related topics they could cover, they chose this ! -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. |
