Hey,
Moving to Bayside, NY next month & I'm sick of TimeWarner so need to change! Cablevision & Verizon Fios don't service Bayside, so it seems its DTV or Dish for me. can anyone outline the best choice & why please? I do know that the major drivers for me are DVR service/HD channels/ sports. One other point - it seems many channels on TimeWarner are broadcast in 4:3, whilst they are actually available on VerizonFios & Cablevision in HD or even non-HD 16:9. Examples are Fox Soccer Channel, CNN, MTV. Can anyone confirm if either DTV Dish suck like TimeWarner in this regard? is there a listing of channels that they may provide in 16:9, even though not in full HD? cheers! |

Both Dish and Directv have DVRs. Dish currently has more HD channels
while Directv has more sports offerings. Directv should have more HD in a few months. Check their websites to see what specific channel offerings are available. wrote: Hey, Moving to Bayside, NY next month & I'm sick of TimeWarner so need to change! I have DTV and am very happy with it. Rumors of a possible return of DTV to TiVO in the near future. DTV is trumpeting the addition of 150HD channels in the near future. . -- Where have you seen these rumors? I have an old DTV TIVO receiver and love it. |

Think of the comcast/TiVo unit which has been discussed for years. Even if DirecTV and TiVo get back into bed, I would think it would be a long long time until we can get our hands on said unit. And I think them getting back into bed at this time is more a dream than anything closer to reality. -- This is my .sig |

It is currently supported. They could take a poll amongst subscribers that have both units, like myself ;-) I really like DirecTV. I've had it since 1994. I currently have two DirecTV DVRs and a DTivo. Someone in this area said that DTV had "better" local channels than Dish. DirecTV does have different local stations than the local cable, so that might be something worth looking into. -- Clarence A Dold - Hidden Valley Lake, CA, USA GPS: 38.8,-122.5 |

thanks
- so, with DTV & DISH, is it true that you need to use an aerial for the local channels like FOX5 & ABC7? (NY) - do i also require an active phone subscription? ( i have a phone line but am not subscribed to any providers & dont want to) |

You mentioned 4x3 vs 16x9 format. I believe that you will find that it is the source of the broadcasting that determines the format. If SciFi wants to broadcast in 4x3 then it pretty hard for DirectTV, Dish or who ever to convert it to 16x9 without distorting the picture. The same issue for watching a old movie on a HD channel and then complaining about the picture quality. You are stuck with the original format. Also watching a sporting event on a HD channel and the broadcasters are using old SD camera equipment. I got Direct TV for the NFL season ticket package and am one of their old-old customers. You can go to the respective web sites and look at the channel line ups and compare. When I got direct tv there was not a dish co. to compare against. It was the little 18" dish attached to the house or a big dish in the yard. |

(NY) If your "local channels" are New York city, then either DTV or Dish have the major networks and independents covered. I've heard that there are some smaller NYC stations missing. http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/packPr...alChannels.jsp Manhattan has 18 local channels, including WNYW and WABC. That's odd, SF has 21. I would have expected NYC to have a lot. - do i also require an active phone subscription? ( i have a phone line but am not subscribed to any providers & dont want to) On my two most recent installs, they ran new phone line for a "normal" receiver, and didn't for a DirecTivo. That's okay, because I have VoIP, and the DTivo won't make a phone call, but the DirecTV DVR does, and I guess the normal receiver did, I never paid attention. I would say "no". -- Clarence A Dold - Hidden Valley Lake, CA, USA GPS: 38.8,-122.5 |
